PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Brittany Raphino and sophomore Zoe Maxwell each scored a goal, sophomore Maesyn G'Bye tallied two assists, junior goalkeeper Maria Guerrero Martinez posted a shutout, and No. 24 Brown University women's soccer topped the University of Vermont, 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
The Bears (11-1-1) netted goals in the 44th and 49th minutes to gain separation from the visiting Catamounts (3-9-3), improving to 9-0-0 at home in 2019 and extending their home winning streak to 12 matches at 12-0-0.
"It was another good team win," Brown head coach Kia McNeill said. "Sometimes these non-conference games that are mixed into the Ivy League schedule can throw you off so I'm happy the team stayed focused and energized through that. It was good to get the result, get a lot of people minutes, and get another shutout."
Brown – ranked No. 5 in the RPI, No. 14 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll, and No. 24 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll – has now posted 11 wins in two of the last three seasons and has tallied 11 or more wins for the 11th time in program history. The Bears have outscored their opponents 20-2 in their nine home games this season and have outscored teams 32-3 during their 12-game home winning streak.
Raphino (Randolph, Mass.) tallied three points on a goal and an assist for her third match this season with three or more points. She leads the Bears in goals (six) and points (15) on the season. Raphino has scored in three of her last four games and netted her second game-winning goal of the year.
Maxwell (Irvington, N.Y.) netted her second goal of the season and her third career goal. She has found the back of the net in two of her last four outings.
G'Bye (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) registered two assists in a match for the second time in her career. She now has three assists on the season and eight assists in her career.
Guerrero Martinez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) made one save in her first shutout of the year and the second shutout of her career.
As a team, Brown has posted nine shutouts on the season, marking the fourth-most clean sheets in a year in school history. The Bears entered the match fourth in the NCAA in fewest goals allowed and seventh in GAA and save percentage.
Junior center back Sydney Cummings (Millstone Township, N.J.) has now played all 1,190 minutes on the season and has helped Brown total 20 shutouts since the start of the 2017 season.
Several other Bears contributed along the back line, including junior Cameron Brown (Portsmouth, Va.), sophomores Lauren Hinton (Middletown, Conn.) and Charlotte DeVaughn (Minneapolis. Minn.), and freshmen Rachyl Francisco (San Jose, Calif.), Laryssa Hamblen (Littleton, Colo.), and Caylah Griffin (Plano, Texas).
Raphino opened the game's scoring at the 43:58 mark, giving the Bears a 1-0 lead on the Catamounts with 1:02 to play in the first half. After G'Bye sent in a long throw from the left side, Raphino flicked the ball into the back of the net.
Maxwell extended the Bears' edge to 2-0 at 48:27, scoring just 3:27 into the second half. G'Bye initiated the play with a long throw along the left side before Raphino carried the ball into the attacking third and sent a cross into the box where Maxwell chipped a shot over the goalkeeper and into the net.
Senior Abby Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) nearly scored in the 25th minute, driving a free kick from just outside the penalty area off the crossbar.
Freshman Ava Seelenfreund (Truckee, Calif.) generated multiple chances, including shots in the 41st and 71st minutes that tested the goalkeeper. She finished the match with six shots and two shots on goal.
For the match, Brown held advantages in shots (26-4), shots on goal (5-1), and corner kicks (12-1). Raphino led all players with seven shots.
Vermont goalkeeper Kacey Lambertson made three saves in the setback.
