PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore goalkeeper James Swomley made seven saves, but Brown University men's soccer dropped a 1-0 decision to Ocean State rival the University of Rhode Island on Tuesday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
The Bears (1-7-2) and Rams (8-3-2) played to a scoreless draw for 70 minutes before the visitors broke through in the 71st minute, and the hosts could not find an equalizer in the final 20 minutes.
"It's always a good game when we get to play URI," Brown head coach Patrick Laughlin said. "They are a talented team. For us there were some very good moments tonight. Again, though, we found ourselves a little bit short in either the ability to score a goal or the ability to prevent a goal. The effort and energy were good, we just need to be a little bit sharper moving forward."
Swomley (Newton, Mass.) has averaged 8.5 saves per game in his last two contests after making a career-high 10 saves in his last outing against Princeton on Saturday.
Rhode Island took a 1-0 lead at the 71:00 mark as Rohun Kawale played a ball into box before Simon Trcka directed a shot into the back of the net for his third goal of the season.
URI goalkeeper Stefan Schmidt tallied five saves in his third shutout of the year.
Swomley made an impressive diving save in the 32nd minute to keep the Rams off the board. Edvin Akselsen swung a ball in from the left flank that Swomley kept out of the lower right corner.
In the 51st minute, Swomley came up with another critical save, parrying away a near post shot from Lucas Gesmundo.
Senior Daniel Schiller (Glenview, Ill.) tested Schmidt on a free kick opportunity from just outside the box in the 81st minute. He curled a shot around the wall, but the Rams' goalkeeper made a clean catch. Schiller led all players in the match with five shots and three shots on goal.
The Rams finished with slight advantages in shots (13-10), shots on goal (8-5), and corner kicks (6-4). At halftime, the two teams stood even in shots (6-6) and shots on goal (3-3) with the Bears holding a 3-2 edge in corners.
Five of Brown's seven setbacks on the season have come via a one-goal margin. The Bears have held their opponents to one goal or fewer in each of five contests.
Next, Brown returns to Ivy League play at Harvard on Saturday, Oct. 19 at noon (ESPN+).
