CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore James Swomley (Newton, Mass.) recorded his fourth career shutout as the Brown men's soccer team defeated Harvard, 3-0, on Saturday at Jordan Field. The shutout also marks Swomley's second of the season.
Three different Bears provided the scoring for Brown (2-7-2, 1-1-1 Ivy League) with senior Matthew Chow (Vancouver, British Columbia) netting what proved to be the game winner in the 12th minute. Sophomore Derek Waleffe (Madison, Wis.) and junior John Vrablic (Avon, Ohio) notched the other two scores in the second half to help distance the Bears.
"It was an excellent showing today by the team," said head coach Patrick Laughlin. "We created multiple chances, scored three goals, and shut out the opposition. The players have been working very hard and I am glad to see that rewarded."
Chow got Brown going at 11:46 of the first half with a strike off a free kick. The Bears dominated play with a 7-2 advantage in shots while the defense held Harvard (0-9-1, 0-3-0 Ivy League) without a shot on goal for the frame.
Waleffe provided a security goal soon into the second at 49:10 when he headed in senior Daniel Schiller's (Glenview, Ill.) corner kick. Vrablic later made it 3-0 with his tally at 85:37. Swomley kept the clean sheet with two saves in the second while Brown outshot Harvard by a 9-4 margin in the stanza.
After corner kicks were tied 2-2 in the first, the Bears held a commanding 5-1 lead in the second.
Oskar Nilsson ended the game with 10 saves in the Crimson net.
