PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University women's soccer freshman forward Ava Seelenfreund has earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors after scoring the game-winning goal in the Bears' 1-0 win over Princeton last weekend, the Ivy League conference office announced on Monday.
A native of Truckee, Calif., Seelenfreund netted the game-winning goal in Brown's 1-0 win over Princeton – the Ivy League preseason favorites and winners of three of the last four Ivy titles – on Saturday. Seelenfreund scored her fourth goal of the season and tallied her third game-winning goal of the year on her header in the 81st minute.
For the season, Seelenfreund leads the Bears with 12 points on four goals and four assists. She paces the Ivy League with three game-winning goals on the year.
At 9-1-1, Brown has posted its best record through 11 games since notching an undefeated (13-0-1) regular season in 1984, and the Bears are 3-0-0 in Ivy play for the first time since 1994. Brown is 8-0-0 at home in 2019 (outscoring opponents 18-2) and 11-0-0 in its last 11 home matches (outscoring opponents 30-3).
In the latest rankings from Oct. 14, the Bears check in at No. 5 in the NCAA RPI and at No. 13 in the Top Drawer Soccer national poll.
Seelenfreund's selection marks Brown's fifth Ivy League weekly award of the season. Junior goalkeeper Kayla Thompson (Austin, Texas) won Ivy League Player of the Week on Sept. 9 and Sept. 16, junior forward Star White (Norfolk, Va.) took Player of the Week on Sept. 30, and freshman forward Brittany Raphino (Randolph, Mass.) gained Rookie of the Week on Oct. 7.
Next, Seelenfreund and the Bears play at Harvard (9-2-0, 3-0-0 Ivy) on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 3:00 p.m. (ESPN+) in a matchup featuring the top two teams in the Ivy League standings.
Video of all Brown women's soccer home contests and all Ivy League games, home and away, will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
