PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After a first half goal by senior Jackson Goebel (Houston, Texas), Princeton netted the equalizer in the 87th minute to force overtime where the Brown men's soccer team played the Tigers to a 1-1 draw on Saturday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Sophomore James Swomley (Newton, Mass.) came up with a diving save to preserve the tie at 109:43 while senior Daniel Schiller (Glenview, Ill.) recorded a shot on goal at 109:59 in a quality chance that was saved by Princeton's Jacob Schachner.
The Bears (1-6-2, 0-1-1 Ivy League) and Tigers (6-3-1, 0-1-1 Ivy League) both earn a point in conference play with the double overtime draw.
"For us, we had to meet their intensity," Brown head coach Pat Laughlin said. "They play at a very high pace and an intense style. We did a great job meeting that. We got an early goal and happened to give up a goal at the end. Even though we were up a man, it was very difficult because of who they are and what they do. The guys worked extremely hard. James Swomley was outstanding. I'm proud of the energy and the effort. For us, it is a step forward."
Brown held a 1-0 lead after the first half of play with a goal from Goebel at 13:58. Senior Austin Lind (North Kingstown, R.I.) crossed the ball into the box where Goebel one-touched it in for his first of the season.
Princeton outshot Brown, 8-4, in the opening frame with Swomley turning away all three of the Tigers' shots on goal. The Tigers also held a 7-0 advantage in corners.
The Tigers played a man down after a red card at 53:21 but that didn't prevent them from holding a 10-5 lead in shots for the second, including a 5-1 margin on target. Danny Hampton forced overtime at 86:13 when his long free kick found the back of the net.
Princeton logged all five of the shots in the first overtime period but the Bears generated some offense in the second extra period, with three shots compared to the Tigers' five.
Swomley came up with a diving stop on a strike from Frankie DeRosa at the top of the 18 in the final minute for his tenth save of the game, a career high, and Schiller won the ball at midfield and drove to the net, firing a shot on target in a valiant effort that concluded the game.
Princeton outshot Brown by a total of 28-12 on the night, 12-4 on goal, and had a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks. Schachner ended the tilt with three saves.
