PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Tommy Marchin (Algonac, Mich.), Chris Berger (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Trey Dodd (St. Louis, Mo.) all scored to lift the Brown men's hockey team over St. Lawrence, 3-1, in ECAC action Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown (6-8-3, 3-4-3 ECAC) improved to 5-2-2 over the last nine games. The Saints dropped to 3-17-1 overall and 1-7-1 on the season.
Berger also added an assist for the two-point night and defenseman Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) collected two assists. Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) stopped 22 shots for his fifth win of the season. Arthur Brey made 31 saves for the Saints. Brown outshot SLU, 34-23.
"I thought we played hard, heavy and smart hockey," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "It was a great response from Tuesday, where we didn't show what Brown hockey was about. The guys played great and we're moving on to a very good Clarkson team."
Marchin put the Bears on the board at 18:33 in the opening period with his fifth goal of the season. Berger worked the puck behind the St. Lawrence net and sent a pass to the front of the crease, where Marchin quickly pushed a shot past Brey for the one-goal lead at the first intermission.
Brown managed to kill a 5-minute major seven minutes into the second period, limiting the Saints to just two shots on net during the power play.
Berger made it a two-goal lead with four minutes left in the second period. Giuttari blasted a shot at the net that was turned away by Brey, but Berger was right there for the rebound, and beat Brey for his second tally of the season.
The Bears made it a three-goal game midway through the third when Dodd corralled a pass from Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.) between a pair of skaters and blasted a shot from the left circle for this second of the season.
Bo Hanson put St. Lawrence on the board with a power-play goal at 13:12, but the Bears kept the Saints at bay the rest of the period to secure the win.
Brown will host No. 14 Clarkson tomorrow at 7 PM.
