PROVIDENCE, R.I. – No. 11/10 Providence scored four goals in the first period and held on the rest of the way as the Brown men's hockey team fell to the Friars, 5-1, in the 33rd annual Mayor's Cup contest Tuesday night at Meehan Auditorium.
Providence (13-6-4) snapped Brown's three-game win streak to retain the Mayor's Cup in the second meeting of the season between the two programs. Brown moved to 5-8-3 on the season.
Five different players scored for the Friars, while rookie Tristan Crozier (Calgary, Alberta) notched the lone goal for Brown. Hayden Hawkey stopped 13 shots to earn the win for the Friars. Luke Kania (Chicago, Ill.) allowed three goals in the loss for the Bears, before giving way to Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.), who recorded 17 saves.
"Credit to them, they came out on fire," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "It's a tough lesson to learn. I think we felt really good, but we forgot the effort, the tenacity, the puck toughness and nastiness that you have to play with to be successful, and I felt that we got away from that structurally. We've got to get back to that heading into Friday."
Providence jumped out to an early lead with four goals in the opening ten minutes. Kasper Bjorkqvist scored a power-play goal at 3:08 before Greg Printz added another tally 39 seconds later for the quick two-goal advantage.
Josh Wilkins and Jack Dugan scored a pair of goals within a 40-second span midway through the period for the four-goal lead at intermission.
Scott Conway made it a five-goal game 2:18 into the middle period when he scored on a drop pass from the left circle.
Brown benefited from a power play shortly after Conway's goal, and managed to put four shots on net, but Hawkey kept the Bears off the board to give the visitors the 5-0 lead heading into the final period.
Crozier broke up the shutout at 14:31 in the third period when he picked up a turnover in front of the Providence net and beat Gabe Mollot-Hill for his fourth tally of the season.
Brown will host St. Lawrence (1/18) and Clarkson (1/19) in ECAC action this weekend.
Video of all home contests and most ECAC games, home and away, will be broadcast live on ESPN+. Fans can subscribe and view games by purchasing a monthly package for $4.99 or a yearly package for $49.99.
