
Rosen Nets Equalizer Before Women’s Soccer Falls to Columbia, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Rebecca Rosen netted an equalizer in the 88th minute before the Lions scored the game-winning goal in the 90th minute as Brown University women's soccer fell to Columbia University, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
In their Ivy League home opener, the Bears (4-6-1, 0-2-0 Ivy) controlled play in the second half and knotted the game at 1-1 with 2:01 remaining before the Lions (5-4-1, 2-0-0 Ivy) re-gained the lead with 44.3 seconds left in regulation.
Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) scored her second goal of the season while freshman Maesyn G'Bye (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) tallied her team-high fourth assist of the year, placing her in a tie for third in the league in assists.
As part of a second half in which the Bears outshot the Lions, 13-3, Rosen broke through at the 87:59 mark as G'Bye played a free kick into the box where Rosen flicked the ball inside the left post for her second goal off a header this year.
Columbia answered just over a minute later as Rachel Alexander found Jordyn Geller on a counterattack and Geller slotted a shot into the right side of the goal at 89:15.
Brown nearly equalized on multiple occasions earlier in the second half beginning with a turnaround shot on goal in the 54th minute from freshman Sara Bermudez (South San Francisco, Calif.) who finished with a game-high six shots.
Junior Abby Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) tested the goalkeeper in the 65th minute, placing a free kick from 19 yards on frame. In the 70th minute, Rosen sent a glancing header off the right post off a long throw-in from G'Bye, and in the 83rd minute a header from Bermudez off a free kick from G'Bye went just over the crossbar.
Columbia took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute as Kathryn Cortiz pushed a ball into the penalty area where Cayla Davis fed Amaris Hemmings who knocked a shot into the goal from inside the six-yard box at 18:33. In the 68th minute, Alexander hit the crossbar.
For the match, the Bears led in shots (20-8) and shots on goal (7-3) while Columbia held a slight advantage in corner kicks (5-4).
Brown senior goalkeeper Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made one save while Columbia net-minder Sophie Whitehouse stopped six shots. The Lions beat the Bears with a goal in the 89th minute or later for the fourth straight year.
Next, Brown continues Ivy League play at Princeton University on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 4:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
