PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Toby Howell (Bradenton, Fla.) scored midway through the second half to trim the lead to one goal, but the Brown men's soccer team fell to Columbia, 3-1, in the Ivy League opener for both teams Saturday at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Brown dropped to 4-4-0 overall and 0-1 in league play, while Columbia moved to 4-2-1, 1-0.
Sophomore Max Gross (Halifax, Nova Scotia) made four saves in the loss for the Bears. Dylan Castanheira turned away six shots on the other end.
After a scoreless first half, Danny Laranetto put the Lions on the board in the 55th minute, as he dribbled into the box and beat a defender for the goal at the post.
The Lions tacked on another goal just over four minutes later, when Beto Carrillo launched a shot from 20 yards out that curved into the top left corner for the two-goal lead.
Brown fought right back into the game when Howell scored his first of the season at 68:07. Daniel Schiller (Glenview, Ill.) sent a pass from the left side to the middle, where Howell beat Castanheira to the ball and quickly muscled a shot into the back of the net, trimming the lead to one goal.
Nevertheless, Columbia answered back when Laranetto scored his second of the game in the 84th minute. Kynan Rocks saved the ball from going out of bounds on the end line and set up Laranetto in the middle for the clean look and two-goal advantage.
Rodrigo D'Andrea (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was able to put a final shot on target in the last minute, but Castanheira turned away the bid.
Columbia held the lead in shots, 19-9.
Brown will visit Princeton next Saturday at 7 PM.
