BOSTON – Rookie Derek Waleffe (Madison, Wis.) scored the go-ahead goal in the 83rd minute to lead the Brown men's soccer team past Boston University, 2-1, in Tuesday's non-conference game at Nickerson Field.
Brown (4-3-0) picked up its second-straight win as the Bears head into Ivy League play this weekend. BU moved to 2-5-2 on the season.
In addition to Waleffe, junior Matthew Chow (Vancouver, British Columbia) also scored for the Bears, while freshman Maxwell Waldau (Fort Myers, Fla.) made three saves in net. William Bonnelyche had two stops for the Terriers.
Brown and Boston had four shots apiece in a scoreless opening half. Chow put the Bears on the board at 59:43 when he curled a free kick into the left side of the net for his second tally in as many games.
The Terriers answered back about 20 minutes later when Kari Petursson placed a shot just under the crossbar from 23 yards out to even the score.
The Bears came right back, however, as Waleffe scored just over four minutes later at 82:33. The rookie picked up a pass from Daniel Schiller (Glenview, Ill.) and beat Bonnelyche with a low shot at the left post for his second goal of the season.
Brown held the Terries to without a shot the rest of the way to seal the win.
BU recorded a slight edge in shots, 12-9. Chow paced the Bears with four shots.
