HANOVER, N.H. – Brown University women's soccer limited Dartmouth College to six shots but fell, 2-0, on Saturday night at Burnham Field in the Ivy League opener for both teams.
The Bears (4-5-1, 0-1-0 Ivy) created the better of the game's chances, but the host Big Green (5-3-1, 1-0-0 Ivy) scored in the fifth minute and added a late goal in the 89th minute.
Brown led Dartmouth in both shots (14-6) and corner kicks (7-6), outshooting the Big Green 10-4 in the second half.
Senior goalkeeper Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made one save – a full-extension stop in the 73rd minute to keep Brown within one goal – in the setback (3-5-1). She now has 248 career saves, tying her for eighth place all-time at Brown with Sarah Kelly '97.
Dartmouth's Bonnie Shea scored in the fifth minute, heading a corner kick from Zoe Boocock off the frame of the goal and into the net at the 4:28 mark. Remy Borinsky added an insurance tally in the 89th minute, sending a ball along the end line that crossed into the goal with 1:24 to play at 88:36.
The Bears created multiple chances in the first half beginning with a header from freshman Charlotte DeVaughn (Minneapolis, Minn.) off a corner kick from freshman Maesyn G'Bye (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) that passed just over the crossbar in the 10th minute.
After Etzel came off her line to snare a cross in the 25th minute, a header from freshman Claire Myers (Fairport, N.Y.) off a cross from sophomore Star White (Norfolk, Va.) was deflected wide. On the ensuing corner, G'Bye sent another dangerous ball into the penalty area.
In the 33rd minute, a shot from freshman Malina Yago (Culver City, Calif.) at the edge of the box was blocked wide, allowing G'Bye another opportunity to send in a dangerous ball. In the first half's waning moments, junior Abby Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.), G'Bye, and senior Jennifer Caruso (Brockton, Mass.) all drove threatening balls into the mixer.
The Bears increased their pressure in the opening minutes of the second half as bids from Caruso, G'Bye, and freshman Rebecca Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) questioned the Big Green's defense. G'Bye played in a pair of dangerous corners from the right side in the 66th and 71st minutes, testing Dartmouth's back line on both occasions.
Inside of the final 20 minutes, Etzel made a diving save to her right off a free kick in the 73rd minute to keep Brown within 1-0 before a shot from White inside the box in the 82nd minute required a point-blank save.
For Dartmouth, goalkeeper Mariel Gordon made three saves in the win (5-3-1).
