PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Derek Waleffe (Madison, Wis.) and junior Daniel Schiller (Glenview, Ill.) both scored in the final ten minutes as the Brown men's soccer team rallied past Bryant, 2-1, in Friday's season opener at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Brown opens the season at 1-0 and Bryant moves to 0-3 overall.
Rookie keeper James Swomley (Newton, Mass.) made two stops in net to pick up the win in his first career game. Oliver Larente recorded five saves for the Bulldogs.
Swomley came up with a big stop at the end of the first half, using a diving save to deny Charles Densantis on a free kick, keeping the game scoreless at halftime.
Nevertheless, Desantis put the visitors on the board early in the second stanza, when he found space at the top of the box and buried a shot in the top left corner of the net.
Brown continued to put shots on net and finally broke through at 80:19, when Waleffe notched his first career goal. After Schiller sent a corner into the box, the rookie took advantage of a bouncing ball in front of the net and then headed home the equalizer.
Schiller followed with the game winner at 88:10 for his first goal of the season. The junior gained possession of a loose ball in Bryant territory and then quickly fired a shot around a defender for the go-ahead goal.
Brown outshot the Bulldogs, 17-8, and secured the edge in corner kicks, 9-4.
The Bears continue the three-game home stand next Friday when they host George Washington at 7 PM.
