Acting as the stroke for the Netherlands' men's eight, de Jong (Amsterdam, Netherlands) helped lead his crew to a heat victory in a time of 5:41.880 on Thursday, topping France (5:46.530), Italy (5:52.450), Poland (5:56.780), and Russia (6:12.320). He and his teammates advanced directly to the A Final and will compete for gold on Sunday.
An Economics concentrator, Miklasevich is representing the U.S. for the third time after two stints with the U.S. Junior National Team. Hoite is racing in his first world championships after graduating with a degree in Biology and earning three nominations to the IRA All-Academic Team (2016-18). After winning the Junior World Championships in the eight in 2015, de Jong – who is studying Architecture at Brown – is back to race for the Netherlands a second time.
With a win at the U.S. Rowing Trials in June, Miklasevich and Hoite were able to qualify their crew to represent the U.S. after a three-week selection camp with the top-20 oarsmen from around the country.
All three student-athletes served as key members of Brown's varsity eight which won a bronze medal at the 2018 EARC Sprints and qualified for the grand final at the IRA National Championships for the 10th straight year. Both Hoite and Miklasevich competed in the varsity eight for Brown in 2017.
