PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Parke Phillips (Venice, Fla.) racked up three hits, but the Brown baseball team fell to Columbia, 8-2, in the opener of a three-game series Friday afternoon at Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium.

Brown moves to 7-17 overall and 3-7 in the Ivy League. Columbia improves to 10-21, 6-4.

Phillips went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored, while junior Willy Homza (Anchorage, Alaska) added two hits and drove in one run. Julian Bury paced the Lions with three hits and a pair of runs. Freshman Joe Lomuscio (West Roxbury, Mass.) drove in the other run for the Bears.

Jordan Chriss picked up the win for Columbia as he allowed one run over 7.0 innings to go along with four strikeouts. Calvin Farris (San Diego, Calif.) took the mound for the Bears and was handed the loss behind three runs over 4.0 frames.

Columbia opened the scoring with two runs on three hits in the second inning. The Lions added one run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth for the three-run lead.

After the Lions added single runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings, Phillips put the Bears on the board in the bottom of the seventh, as he hit a leadoff double and eventually crossed the plate on a groundout.

Columbia came back with three more runs over the final two frames, before the Bears tacked on a final run in the last half of the ninth, as Phillips scored on Homza's single to center field.

Brown and Columbia will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Saturday. The first game is set to start at 11:30 AM.
