Baseball Drops Midweek Game to Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomores Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) and Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) both hit home runs, but the Brown baseball team dropped a midweek contest to Rhode Island, 11-5, on Tuesday at Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium.

Brown moves to 7-16 overall, while URI improves to 8-23.

Delano went 2-for-3 at the plate with a three-run home run, while eight other Bears posted one hit apiece. Sam Ilario paced the Rams with three hits and three runs.

Rookie Pat Petteruti (East Greenwich, R.I.) took the loss as the starter and Vitaly Jangols earned the win behind one earned run over 5.0 innings.

After the Rams scored one run in the first innings, the Bears quickly evened the score in the bottom half, when Ciufo blasted a solo shot on the first pitch over the left field fence. The Rams came back with four runs on three hits in the top of the second for the four-run advantage.

The two teams then pitched four scoreless innings, before the Rams padded their lead with four runs in the top of the seventh. The Bears answered with three runs in the bottom part of the frame, starting when Joe Lomuscio (West Roxbury, Mass.) hit a one-out single and Ciufo followed with a walk, before Delano cleared the bases with a three-run homer to left center.

Brennan Vasquez (Milton, Fla.) hit a double and later scored in the eighth, but the Rams scored one run in the each of the final two frames to secure the victory.

Brown will return to Ivy League play this weekend when the Bears host Columbia in a three-game series. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday (11:30 AM) and a single game on Sunday (1 PM). Sunday's game will be broadcast on the Ivy League Network.
