
Women’s Hockey Defeated by No. 8 Providence in Mayor’s Cup

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown women's hockey team was defeated by No. 8 Providence, 8-0, in the 24th Annual Mayor's Cup on Tuesday night at Meehan Auditorium. With the win, the Friars pull ahead in the Mayor's Cup series, 11-10-3.
"Congrats to Providence for a great game," said head coach Carisa Wahlig. "We've finished out first semester and will have more non-conference games starting in January."
Providence (14-3-0) opened its scoring at 9:07 of the first period when Emily Landry put in an unassisted score. The Friars made it 2-0 just before the end of the stanza when Cassidy MacPherson registered a tally at 17:47. Brown (5-7-1) held PC to just six shots in the period but the visitors still held the edge in the opening frame, 6-4.
The Friars gained a 3-0 advantage at 3:31 of the second when Hayley Lunny put in a goal. Providence pushed its lead to four at 7:39 with a 5-on-3 score by Kate Friesen. PC increased their offensive pressure in the period, recording 18 shots with freshman Hayley Kliczko (Niles, Ill.) turning away 16 of them.
MacPherson added her second score of the night in the third (1:59) for a 5-0 lead. Maureen Murphy (10:35), Ciara Barone (14:15) and Caroline Peterson (18:45) added goals to close out the scoring for the Friars.
Kliczko concluded the game with 28 saves while Madison Myers ended the night with 12 stops. Clare Minnerath finished the third for PC with three saves.
Sophomore Kaitijane Blumberg (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) led the Bears in shots with four while senior Abby Niewchas (Cochrane, Alberta) had three.
The Bears are off until 2019 and will return to action with a non-conference series versus RIT on Friday, Jan. 4 and Saturday, Jan. 5 at Meehan Auditorium. Friday's game will start at 6:00 p.m. while Saturday's finale will begin at 3:00 p.m.
Video of all Brown women's hockey home contests and all ECAC games, home and away, will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
