
Women’s Hockey Hosts No. 8 Providence in 24th Mayor’s Cup

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's hockey team will host the 24th installment of the Mayor's Cup on Tuesday, Dec. 4 versus No. 8 Providence at Meehan Auditorium starting at 6:00 p.m. The series between the inter-city rivals began in 1996 with Brown coming away victorious, 4-3, on January 24 in the inaugural game. Providence has won the last four match-ups including last season's 3-1 victory at Schneider Arena. The Mayor's Cup series is tied at 10-10-3.

SCOUTING THE FRIARS
Providence is ranked eighth in both the USCHO.com and the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls and brings a 13-3-0 overall record (8-2-0 Hockey East) into Tuesday night's game. The Friars most recently split a home-and-home series with UConn, winning the first game, 4-1, in Storrs, Conn. on Nov. 30 before falling in the finale in Providence, 2-1, on Dec. 1, snapping a nine-game win streak. Maureen Murphy leads the team in goals (14), assists (12) and points (26). Christina Putigna ranks second on the squad in scoring with an even seven goals and seven assists for 14 points. Madison Myers has started 14 games in net for Providence and has a 1.22 goals-against average, a .948 save percentage and three shutouts for a 12-2-0 mark. Sandra Abstreiter has played in two games, going 1-1-0 while logging a 3.54 GAA and a .841 save percentage.
BROWN LEADERS
Sena Hanson leads the Bears in scoring with 12 points on a team-best nine goals and three assists. The junior was named ECAC Player of the Week on Nov. 5 after she recorded four goals, including two game winners, and one assist in two 4-3 upset victories over No. 9/10 Colgate (Nov. 2) and No. 6/6 Cornell (Nov. 3). Freshman Shay Maloney (1-7-8) is tied for second on the team in scoring with fellow rookie Lizzy Gross (5-3-8) with eight points. Maloney paces the Bears in assists with seven. Junior Calla Isaac leads the netminder group in starts with seven and has a 3.41 GAA and a .911 save percentage. She was named ECAC Goaltender of the Week after she made 38 saves in both of Brown's victories on Nov. 2-3, with 16 stops in a scoreless the third period versus the Raiders and 11 against the Big Red in another scoreless third. Freshman Hayley Kliczko has appeared in six games (five starts) this season between the pipes, recording a 3.18 GAA and a .916 save percentage. The rookie recorded a career-best 44 saves at Union on Nov. 10 in a 2-2 tie, which included four saves in overtime.
LAST TIME OUT
Brown was defeated by Boston University, 5-2, in a non-conference game on Tuesday, Nov. 27 at Meehan Auditorium. Junior Sena Hanson scored the game-tying goal midway through in the third period but the Terriers would close the frame with three goals to take the win. Hanson concluded the night with two goals, her third game with two goals and her team-leading fifth multipoint contest.
LAST YEAR VS. PROVIDENCE
Providence captured the 23rd Mayor's Cup at Schneider Arena last season on Jan. 2. The Friars scored three goals in a little over four minutes to open the first period and maintained an advantage until the final whistle. Brown received its score from sophomore Kaitijane Blumberg at the end of the third. Junior Calla Isaac finished the game with 36 saves, with 14 and nine in a scoreless second and third period, respectively.
CENTURY MARK
With Tuesday's game versus Providence, senior Cara Najjar will have reached 100 games played for her career. The defender has six goals and 22 assists for 28 points in her four years.
NEXT UP
The Bears will be off until 2019 when they will return to action with a non-conference series versus RIT on Friday, Jan. 4 and Saturday, Jan. 5 at Meehan Auditorium. Friday's game will start at 6:00 p.m. while Saturday's finale will begin at 3:00 p.m.
