Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – Sophomore Desmond Cambridge (Nashville, TN) scored a game high 30 points by knocking down six treys to lead Brown (8-4) to a 78-53 win over Marist (5-6) at the McCann Center Saturday afternoon.
The Bears' eighth non-league win of the season is one short of the school record of nine non-league victories by Brown teams in 2001-02, 2014-15 and 2016-17.
The Bears shot 52-percent from the field (30-of-57), while holding Marist to 32-percent shooting (18-of-56). Brown forced 16 Marist turnovers and held the Red Foxes to their lowest scoring output of the season (53 points).
"We turned in a really good defensive performance throughout the entire 40 minutes," said Brown head coach Mike Martin. "Once we got our offense going we were able to stretch the lead."
Cambridge put on a show with a wide array of treys, turn-around jump shots and drives to the basket, connecting on 12-of-18 field goals, including 6-of-11 treys, in scoring his 30 points. He seems to save his best for the Red Foxes, having scored a career high 33 points against Marist a year ago.
"Desmond is a special talent, who can make incredibly tough shots look easy," said Martin.
junior Joshua Howard (Charlotte, NC) added 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field, while senior Obi Okolie (Ajax, Ontario) scored 10 points, hitting all four of his field goal attempts. Bears' freshman David Mitchell (Roxbury, MA) grabbed a team high five rebounds.
Marist was paced by Aleksander Dozik with 16 points and a game high seven rebounds.
Coming off a 14-day break for exams, Brown looked sluggish from the opening tip, falling behind 7-0. The Bears quickly countered with an 11-2 run to pull ahead, 11-9, on a basket by Okolie.
With the score tied, 17-17, Brown went on a 13-4 run to grab its largest lead of the half, 30-21, on a free throw by Okolie with 1:12 remaining. A three-point play by Marist's Austin William cut Brown's lead to 30-24 at intermission.
Brown opened the second half with a 10-3 run behind eight points by Cambridge to lead, 40-27, at the 17:43 mark.
Marist cut Brown's lead to 10 points, 45-35, on a Williams layup at the 14:20 mark.
The Bears broke the game open with a 16-0 run over the next 4:10 minutes, taking a 61-35 advantage on a trey by junior Zach Hunsaker (North Salt Lake City, UT) with 10:17 remaining in the game. Brown out-scored Marist 48-29 in the second half to cruise to the win.
After a short break for the Christmas holiday, Brown heads to the West Coast on Saturday, December 29 to face San Diego State. Tip-off is 5:00 PST at Viejas Arena in a game broadcast on Fox Sports San Diego and WPRV AM 790.
