San Diego, Ca. – Brown utilized a 26-0 first half run to build a 50-22 halftime lead and cruise to an 82-61 win over San Diego State behind the play of Bears' sophomore Desmond Cambridge (Nashville, TN), who scored 16 of his game high 25 points in the opening half.
The win for Brown (9-4) ties the school record for non-league wins in a season, while San Diego State falls to 7-5 overall.
"Everyone on our team has been impressive over the last two weeks," said Brown head coach Mike Martin. "The game really turned on the 26-0 run and the ball went in the basket. Our guys have really bought into our defensive effort. It's a fun group to coach."
Cambridge's 25 points came on 9-of-15 shooting from the field, while connecting on seven treys for the second straight game, converting 7-of-11 3-point field goals. His seven treys are eight best in Brown basketball history.
Sophomore Tamenang Choh (Lowell, MA) also had a big game for the Bears with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the fields and a game high six rebounds.
Senior Obi Okolie (Ajax, Ontario) tossed in 13 points for the Bears, while junior Joshua Howard (Charlotte, NC) chipped in with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field.
The Aztecs were paced by projected NBA first round pick Jalen McDaniels with 19 points and six rebounds.
The Bears had the better of play at the game's outset, building a 19-7 lead on a layup by Choh at the 14:07 mark on 7-of-11 early shooting from the field. Brown kept up the pressure and held a 24-12 lead on a trey by sophomore Brandon Anderson with 10:06 left in the half.
An 8-0 run by the Aztecs cut Brown's lead to 24-20, but the Bears came storming back with a 26-0 spurt for a 50-20 advantage on a layup by Okolie with 1:19 left in the half. Cambridge knocked down four treys in the spurt to spark the Bears.
The Aztecs broke a nearly 8-minute scoring drought just before the end of the half on a dunk by Aguek Arop with 29 seconds remaining to cut Brown's lead to 50-22 at the half.
Cambridge knocked down consecutive treys early in the second half for a 58-24 Brown lead and put the game out of reach.
San Diego State chipped away at the Brown lead, but could get no closer than a 20-point second half deficit.
The Bears return home to open the new year on Wednesday, January 2, hosting Maine at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Tip-off is 7:00 pm on ESPN+ and WPRV AM-790.
