Homza, Sluys and Ciufo selected as team captains in 2019
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Head coach Grant Achilles of the Brown University baseball program has announced that seniors Willy Homza (Anchorage, Alaska) and Mark Sluys (Gig Harbor, Wash.) and junior Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) will serve as team captains for the upcoming season.
Â
"These three have emerged not only as leaders on the field, but also in how they represent Brown Baseball away from it," said Achilles. "Each brings an individual style of leadership, and their competitiveness and standards of excellence as student-athletes will be a solid foundation for our program to continue building on in 2019."
Â
Homza started all 36 games for the Bears last season as the team's primary shortstop and finished the season second on the team in batting average during Ivy League play. He also led the team with 12 doubles and set a career high in hits. Homza will head into the spring with 95 career games played.
Â
Sluys split time between catcher and designated hitter last season, starting 25 games, and ended the season ranked third on the team in slugging percentage. The senior also set career highs in hits, doubles and RBIs.
Â
Ciufo has been a mainstay in the Brown infield over his first two seasons and started all 36 games last season as the team's second baseman. He finished second on the Bears in doubles and also set career highs in hits, home runs, RBIs and runs.
Â
Brown will open the season with a three-game series at Louisville (Feb. 22-24).
