PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University women's soccer senior goalkeeper Christine Etzel, junior midfielder Abby Carchio, and sophomore back Sydney Cummings have all earned NEWISA All-New England honors, the New England Intercollegiate Women's Soccer Association announced on Friday.
Etzel (Madison, Conn.) and Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) both gained First Team All-New England while Cummings (Millstone Township, N.J.) garnered Second Team All-New England accolades. Etzel collected All-New England for the third time, Carchio for the second time, and Cummings for the first time.
A three-time All-Ivy selection and the 2016 Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, Etzel finished her career ranked second all-time at Brown in goals-against average (0.81), tied for second in shutouts (23), tied for third in wins (32), eighth in saves (259), and eighth in save percentage (.838). This fall, she earned selection as a Senior CLASS Award Candidate and gained a spot in the NEWISA Senior Bowl, while serving the team as a captain.
A First Team All-Ivy honoree in each of the last two seasons, Carchio garnered United Soccer Coaches Third Team All-East Region accolades and New England Midfielder of the Year honors from the New England Soccer Journal. In 2018, she ranked first in the Ivy League in points (28) and assists (eight) and second in goals (10). She stood first in the conference in assists (six), second in points (12), and third in goals (three) in Ivy play.
An All-Ivy selection in each of her first two seasons, Cummings played 1,538 of a possible 1,557 minutes (98.8 percent) this past season after playing all 1,475 minutes as a rookie. She has started all 33 games as a center back over the last two years and scored her first two collegiate goals this fall.
