POTSDAM, N.Y. – Joachim Weberg (Oslo, Norway) scored early in the second period to trim the deficit to one goal, but the Brown men's hockey team fell to No. 17 Clarkson, 5-1, in ECAC play Friday night at Cheel Arena.
Brown (1-6-1, 1-4-1) and Clarkson (8-4-0, 2-1-0) were even in shots at 28-28.
Jake Kielly made 27 stops in the win for Clarkson. Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) made 23 saves in net for the Bears.
"We just looked a little scattered tonight," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "It's not that we didn't work hard, but I don't think we worked intelligently. As a team, from the staff on down, we just need to do a better job."
Clarkson jumped out to an early lead with two goals in the opening period. Kevin Charyszyn scored the first goal just 44 seconds into the contest when he knocked in a one-timer right in front of the net. After Brown killed the only penalty of the period, Marly Quince rifled a shot from between the circles at 14:41, giving the home team a two-goal lead at the first intermission.
Weberg scored 2:32 into the second period to cut the deficit to one goal. Chris Berger (Buffalo, N.Y.) skated through the right circle and flicked a pass to the front of the net, where Weberg was waiting and beat Kielly for his first tally of the season. Freshman defenseman Dorian Dawson (Collingwood, Ontario) also earned an assist for his first career point.
Clarkson answered back at 11:21 when Aaron Thow crashed the net on a pass from Haralds Egle to push the Knights back up by two heading into the final period.
After Brown was called for a five-minute major midway through the third period, Connor McCarthy scored with 1:16 left in the power play, giving the Golden Knights a 4-1 advantage.
Brown benefited from a power play with 4:34 remaining and put three shots on target, but the Golden Knights killed the penalty, before Nick Campoli scored unassisted to wrap up the win.
Brown will visit St. Lawrence tomorrow at 7 PM.
