Etzel Posts 23rd Career Shutout
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Abby Carchio tallied a goal and two assists, senior Jennifer Caruso scored the game-winning goal, and Brown University women's soccer blanked Yale University, 3-0, on Saturday night in its season finale at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Celebrating Senior Day, the Bears (8-8-1, 3-4-0 Ivy) netted three goals inside a 10-minute span in the second half – with goals in the 53rd, 59th, and 62nd minutes – to defeat the visiting Bulldogs (7-9-1, 2-5-0 Ivy).
"I was happy we were able to settle in," Brown head coach Kia McNeill said. "Abby Carchio had a tremendous game, and Christine Etzel getting the shutout was big. Our whole pre-game talk was all about the seniors and playing for them. Christine has been tremendous for us, and Jenny getting her first goal of the season was a great way for her to end her career. It's been a great senior class, and we were happy that we got the win for them."
Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) posted four or more points in a match for the fourth time this season and for the third time in her last four games. She finished the year ranked first in the Ivy League in points (28), first in assists (eight), and second in goals (10). In Ivy play, she closed the year second in points (12), first in assists (six), and third in goals (three).
Senior goalkeeper Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made three saves in her fourth shutout of the season and her second clean sheet in a row. In the Brown record books, she concluded her career ranked second all-time in GAA (0.81), tied for second in shutouts (23), tied for third in wins (32), eighth in saves (259), and eighth in save percentage (.838).
Senior Jennifer Caruso (Brockton, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season and the fifth of her career while notching her second career game-winning goal. Freshman Charlotte DeVaughn (Minneapolis, Minn.) registered her second goal of the season with a header off a corner kick from Carchio.
Brown's back four of DeVaughn, sophomores Sydney Cummings (Millstone Township, N.J.) and Cameron Brown (Portsmouth, Va.), and freshman Lauren Hinton (Middletown, Conn.) contributed to Brown's fifth team shutout of the year.
Prior to the game, Brown honored seniors Jennifer Caruso (Brockton, Mass.), Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.), Megan Grant (Carlsbad, Calif.), Nicole Phillips (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.), and Celia Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) for their hard work and dedication to the program. The Class of 2019 finished their careers with a 35-22-8 overall record and a 14-11-3 Ivy League mark.
Caruso opened the game's scoring in the 53rd minute following a scoreless first half. After the Yale defense blocked an initial bid from Carchio, Caruso sent a one-timed shot from 14 yards out into the right side of the goal at the 52:12 mark.
Just over six minutes later, Carchio doubled the Bears' lead to 2-0 in the 59th minute with a goal off a free kick. Measuring a bid from outside the left side of the box, Carchio fired a shot into the right-side netting at 58:13.
DeVaughn capped the game's scoring in the 62nd minute. Carchio sent a corner kick from the left side into the goal area where a waiting DeVaughn headed the ball into the back of the net at 61:15.
For the match, Brown held advantages in shots (19-5), shots on goal (8-3), and corner kicks (12-5). In the second half, the Bears led 10-0 in shots, 5-0 in shots on goal, and 9-1 in corner kicks.
Yale goalkeepers Alyssa Fagel and Jane Buckley made three and two saves respectively.
The result marked Brown's largest margin of victory against an Ivy League opponent since a 4-0 win over Cornell on Oct. 21, 2007 and marked the Bears' largest margin of victory against Yale since a 5-0 win on Sept. 17, 1988.
The Bears concluded the year with 29 goals on the season, marking their highest goal total since netting 37 goals in 2006. Brown finished the year with a record of .500 or better for the fourth straight season.
