PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Tristan Crozier (Calgary, Alberta) and Tommy Marchin (Algonac, Mich.) both scored, but the Brown men's hockey team fell to Harvard, 5-2, Saturday night at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown moved to 1-4-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the ECAC, while Harvard improved to 1-2-2, 1-2-2.
Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) made 20 saves in the loss for the Bears. Michael Lackey posted 23 stops for the Crimson. The two teams were even in shots, 25-25.
"I thought we had a really good first period, but then we got away from what made us successful in that period," said Brown head coach Brendan Whittet. "They are a good hockey team and very talented offensively, so we need to learn from it and grow from it, and not take a period off."
Crozier scored a power-play goal with 1:51 left in the first period to give Brown the one-goal lead at the first intermission. The rookie received a pass from Tony Stillwell (Green Bay, Wis.) and launched a shot from the right circle past Lackey for his third tally of the season. Jake Harris (Toronto, Ont.) also earned an assist on the play.
Brown outshot Harvard, 9-7, in the opening frame.
Harvard answered back with three goals in the middle period, starting when Jack Donato scored at 2:42 to even the score. Brown then killed a pair of penalties, including a 5-on-3 by the Crimson, but Frederic Gregoire put the visitors in front and Reilly Walsh followed with a power-play goal at 14:53 to make it a 3-1 lead after the second period.
After Jack Badini added another power-play goal at 8:37 in the third period, Marchin trimmed the lead back to two goals, when he fired a shot from the left circle that snuck behind the pad of Lackey for his first tally of the season.
Brown benefited from a late power play and then pulled Nieto with about two minutes left in regulation, but Adam fox scored a shorthanded empty-net goal at 18:36 to seal the victory.
Brown will visit UConn on Tuesday night.
