Game Notes vs. Yale 11-3-18

Providence, R.I. - Brown will travel to the Yale Bowl for the second straight season to take on defending Ivy League Champion Yale on Saturday, November 3. A change in the Ivy schedule had Penn coming to Providence for two straight years and the Bears going to New Haven for two consecutive seasons to face the Bulldogs. Brown had finished its Ivy season against Columbia each year since 1964, but will now complete its season against Dartmouth. All the action starts at 1:00 pm on ESPN+ and WPRV AM 790.

Brown's Record: Brown (1-6, 0-4 Ivy) made a late run at Penn in Saturday's game played at Brown Stadium in a Nor'easter, but came up short in a 13-7 loss to the Quakers. Brown's touchdown came on a 20-yard pass from sophomore Michael McGovern to junior Jakob Prall.

Yale's Record:The Bulldogs (4-3, 1-2 Ivy) are coming off a 17-10 loss at Columbia, despite having a 428-157 advantage in total yards. Quarterback Jimmy Check passed for 238 yards, completing 18-of-35 passes for Yale.

Brown vs. Yale – 123^rdMeeting: Brown and Yale have met 122 times, dating back to 1880, with the Bulldogs holding an 82-35-5 series advantage. Last year, Yale earned a 34-7 win over the Bears at the Yale Bowl. In 2016, LJ Harriott ran for 92 yards and a touchdown to lead the Bears to a 27-22 win over the Bulldogs in Providence. Brown head coach Phil Estes is 10-10 lifetime against the Bulldogs.

Bear Facts: With a change in the Ivy League schedule in 2018, Brown will travel to Yale for its second straight game in New Haven. Dartmouth and Columbia have flip-flopped on the Bears schedule, with Brown hosting Columbia in week nine and closing its season at Dartmouth…Junior Brendan Pyne made seven tackles vs. Penn, including 3.5 for a loss. His 7.0 tackles behind the line of scrimmage lead the Bears…Junior wide receiver LJ Harriott scored on a 65-yard run against Cornell after catching nine passes for 117 yards vs. Princeton, both career highs…Sophomore Davis Bak made a career high 12 tackles vs. Penn. He missed all of last year due to injury…Senior linebacker Daniel Aidman leads the Bears with 62 total tackles…Junior Jakob Prall, who caught a 20-yard TD pass vs. Penn, leads the Bears with four touchdowns…The Bears have blocked two field goals (Michael Hoecht vs. Princeton and BJ Ubani vs. Penn) and an extra point (Zach Genaway vs. Princeton) this season.

McGovern Runs The Offense:Sophomore Michael McGovern (St. Louis, MO), who had a terrific spring and fall pre-season, took over as Brown's starting quarterback in the Bears' opener vs. Cal Poly and has shown continued improvement in every game. McGovern ranks 35^thnationally in completions with 17.29 per game. He passed for 268 yards and a touchdown, completing 23-of-42 passes, and rushed for 53 yards and a TD vs. Georgetown. McGovern threw for 195 yards and a touchdown vs. Cornell, while rushing for 30 yards. He completed 22-of-43 passes for 293 yards vs. Harvard including his first two career touchdown passes of four and 29 yards. In his collegiate debut, McGovern threw for 312 yards against Cal Poly, completing 25-of-50 passes, while rushing for 23 yards. He's backed-up by senior Nick Duncan (St. Louis, MO), who opened last season by leading the Bears to a victory over Bryant before suffering an injury the following week at Harvard. Last year, Duncan completed 51-of-103 passes for 463 yards and two touchdowns.

Hoecht Leads Defensive Front:Brown's unit is led by junior captain DE Michael Hoecht (Oakwood, OH), who leads the Bears' defensive linemen and ranks third on the team with 53 tackles, including 5.0 tackles for a loss and a team leading 3.0 quarterback sacks. Hoecht made eight tackles vs. Penn. He made nine tackles, including one for a loss, and blocked a field goal vs. Princeton. Hoecht had an impressive start vs. Cal Poly with 14 total tackles and made six tackles vs. #17 Rhode Island. Last year, Hoecht had 45 tackles, including 10 tackles for a loss and five QB sacks.

More Defensive Frontliners: Senior defensive tackle Daryle Banfield (Bronx, NY) has 25 tackles on the season after making five tackles vs. Penn. He registered eight tackles vs. Cal Poly and three vs. Harvard and Georgetown. Banfield made 18 tackles last year, including six for a loss and a QB sack. Senior Zach Genaway (Medford, NY) made nine tackles vs. Cal Poly and four against Harvard, Georgetown and Penn after making 10 tackles all of last season. Genaway, who has 27 tackles on the season, made four tackles, including a quarterback sack vs. Princeton. He has also blocked an extra point against the Tigers.

Offensive Line: Senior Toby Okwara (Charlotte, NC) will play a key role at center. Senior LG Logan Winders (Springfield, IL) and junior RG Nicholas Allsop (North Easton, MA) are also mainstays of the offensive line along with junior RT Phil Lynch (Milton, MA), sophomore LT Chad Broom-Webster (Orlando, FL) and junior Jay Carnevale (North Andover, MA).

Aidman to the Rescue:Senior linebacker Daniel Aidman (Austin, TX), who leads the Bears with 62 tackles, registered nine tackles vs. Princeton and eight stops vs. Cornell. Aidman registered nine tackles, including one for a loss, while forcing a fumble vs. Penn. He came up with a big outing vs. Cal Poly with 14 total tackles, including six solo stops. Aidman also made six stops, including a tackle for loss vs. Harvard and had four tackles vs. Georgetown. He had 12 tackles vs. #17 Rhode Island. Last year, Aidman had 45 tackles, including 5.5 for a loss.

Amushie Seventh Nationally In Solo Tackles:Sophomore defensive back Chima Amushie (Richmond, TX) ranks seventh in the nation with 6.2 solo hits per game. Amushie had eight solo tackles vs. Cornell, making 10 stops overall. He made nine tackles vs. Cal Poly and added seven solo stops vs. Harvard. He paced the Bears with eight solo hits vs. Georgetown and had nine tackles, including six solo stops vs. #17 Rhode Island.

Secondary to None: In the secondary, senior defensive back Sebastian Dovi (Newark, DE) had a terrific sophomore season (37 tackles, two interceptions), but missed nine games last year due to injury. Dovi intercepted his second pass of the season vs. Georgetown. He registered seven tackles vs. Cal Poly, and came back with seven tackles and an interception vs. Harvard…Senior DB Jorquel Condomina (Naples, FL), who made two tackles vs. Cal Poly and five tackles with an interception vs. Harvard, had an impressive 2017 season with 27 tackles, an interception and two tackles for loss. He intercepted his second pass of the season vs. #17 URI...Sophomore Izayah Powell (Bronx, NY) made six tackles against Cal Poly and led the Bears with eight tackles, including five solo stops vs. Harvard. Powell also made seven tackles vs. Penn. He has 26 tackles for the season…Freshman Clayton Perrin (Pflugerville, TX) has seen considerable action in the secondary with 31 tackles, fifth best on the Brown team. He made nine tackles vs. Princeton, and was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week after making seven tackles vs. Cornell.

Brady Delivers:The place kicking duties are being handled by freshman Dylan Brady (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA), who has converted six of nine field goal attempts and nine-of-nine extra points. Brady, who had a 36-yard field goal vs. Princeton and a 37-yard kick vs. Cornell, booted a 27-yard field goal vs. Harvard. He hit all three of his field goals vs. Cal Poly on boots of 29, 23 and 30 yards.

Kopec Handles Punting Duties: Brown's punting duties are handled by senior Ryan Kopec (Alpharetta, GA), who is punting at a 39.5 yards per punt average, third best in the Ivy League. His 72 yard punt vs. Penn ranks eighth all-time at Brown and is the longest punt in the Ivy League this season. He nailed a 67-yard punt vs. #17 Rhode Island, averaging 43.1 yards per punt on eight punts. Kopec punted for a 40.7 yards per punt average vs. Cal Poly and 40.1 yards per punt vs. Georgetown. He averaged 39.7 yards per punt last season.

Running Downfield: Freshman tailback Allen Smith (Westerville, OH) paced the Bears with 54 yards vs. Princeton, including a 13-yard touchdown run, his second of the season. Smith also rushed for 64 yards vs. Cornell and caught a seven yard touchdown pass against the Big Red. He leads the Bears with 175 rushing yards on the season. Sophomore RB Darius Daies (St. Louis, MO) made some noise as a freshman, running for 95 yards and two touchdowns vs. Rhode Island. Junior Andrew Bolton (Troy, NY) has 95 yards on the season.

All-Purpose Harriott: Junior Livingstone Harriott (Central Islip, NY)) returns for his junior season and can and will be used at quarterback, running back and wide receiver. He ran eight times for 40 yards vs. Penn. Harriott rushed for 73 yards vs. Cornell, including a 65-yard touchdown scamper, while making a 56-yard reception. He made a career high nine catches for 117 yards vs. Princeton. He made two catches vs. Cal Poly and Georgetown. Last year, Harriott had 21 catches, 159 receiving yards, 109 rushing yards, two TD's.

Casey Targeted: Senior captain Anton Casey (Bethesda, MD), a preseason All-Ivy tight end, leads the Bears wide receiving corps with 20 receptions. Casey made four catches for 69 yards vs. Cornell. He made a game high six receptions for 61 yards vs. Cal Poly, and hauled in four catches for 64 yards vs. Harvard, including a 29-yard TD catch. Casey made four catches for 29 yards against Georgetown. Last year, Casey made 14 catches for 198 yards.

Prall On The Receiving End: Junior Jakob Prall (Tipp City, OH), an All-Ivy selection, led the team with 51 catches last year. He caught three passes vs. Penn, including a 20-yard touchdown pass. Prall scored Brown's first three touchdowns vs. Georgetown, catching a three yard pass and then rushing for touchdowns of 10 and five yards. He made four catches for 62 yards vs. Cal Poly and three catches for 120 yards vs. Harvard. Prall also had three receptions for 45 yards vs. Cornell.

Montano Named Campbell Trophy Semifinalist:Brown senior tri-captain Christian Montano(Orange, CT) is among 179 football student-athletes, including seven other Ivy League standouts, to be named semifinalists for the 2018 William V. Campbell Trophy, presented by Fidelity Investments®. The award recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation.

Blandburg Catching On: Junior Jaelon Blandburg (Orange County, CA) leads the Bears' receiving corps with 20 receptions for 220 yards. He had 33 receptions and two TD's in 2017. Blandburg made five receptions for 45 yards against Cal Poly. He paced the Bears with five catches vs. Harvard, including a four-yard touchdown reception, and had five receptions for 69 yards vs. Georgetown.

Pyne on the Outside: Junior Brendan Pyne (Bradenton, FL) ranks second on the Brown team with 55 total tackles, including 7.0 for a loss. He made seven tackles vs. Penn, including 3.5 for a loss. Pyne registered nine tackles vs. Princeton and 10 tackles vs. Cornell, including eight solo stops. He made seven tackles, including one for a loss vs. Cal Poly and came back with seven tackles and a tackle for loss vs. Harvard and six tackles vs. Georgetown. Pyne made nine tackles vs. #17 Rhode Island. He had 43 tackles a year ago.

Ejiogu-Dike Inside:Sophomore Kingsley Ejiogu-Dike (Brockton, MA), who made 22 tackles last season, made a career high nine tackles vs. Cal Poly, while forcing a fumble. He has 20 tackles on the season.

All-Purpose Boylan: Sophomore Scott Boylan (Bakersfield, CA), who made nine catches a year ago, is also a standout return specialist, who had a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown last season. He rushed for a team high 44 yards vs. Penn. Boylan rushed for a team high 47 yards vs. Cal Poly, including a 26 yard touchdown run. He also made four catches for 28 yards and returned two kickoffs 24 yards.

Brown Head Coach Phil Estes:Since Phil Estes became head coach of the Bears in 1998, his Brown football teams have captured three Ivy League titles (1999, 2005, 2008), finished second four times, third five times, and overall have finished in the top half of the Ivy League in 16 of his 20 seasons, while compiling an impressive 76-68 Ivy mark (.528), 115-91 (.558) overall. Estes' 76 career Ivy League wins are the most ever at Brown and rank sixth in the Ivy League record book, while his 115 career wins overall rank 10th all-time in the Ivy League. Estes' 206 career games coached at Brown are ninth in Ivy football history. Estes, the 19th head coach in Brown history, is the second winningest coach in Brown football history, guiding the Brown football program to an unprecedented level of success, winning three Ivy League Championships, including Brown's first ever Ivy outright title in 2005. He has also coached and recruited Brown's only four Ivy League Players of the Year – Sean Morey '99, James Perry '00, Nick Hartigan '06 and Buddy Farnham '10. In the 20 years Estes has coached on the East Side, five of his players have gone on to win Super Bowl rings. The select fraternity includes two-time champion James Develin of the New England Patriots (2014, 2016), two-time winner Zak DeOssie '07 of the New York Giants (2008, 2012), the Pittsburgh Steelers' Sean Morey (2006) and New England Patriots' Drew Inzer (2001) and Chas Gessner (2003).

Bears Elect Captains:Senior tight end Anton Casey (Bethesda, MD), senior center Christian Montano (Orange, CT) and junior defensive end Michael Hoecht (Oakwood, OH) have been named captains of the 2018 Brown football team.

Bears In The NFL: Brown has three of its former players on NFL rosters in 2018. Fullback James Develin '10, an engineering concentrator and defensive end at Brown, enters his sixth season with the New England Patriots. A Pro Bowl selection in 2017, Develin is the New England Patriots starting fullback for three of the last four years, including the 2014 and 2016 Super Bowl Championship teams. Zak DeOssie '07 is a two-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time Super Bowl Champion (2008, 2012) for the New York Giants. Coming into the 2018 season, DeOssie is the 2nd-longest tenured Giants player, behind Eli Manning. Dewey Jarvis '17.5 made the 53-man roster of the Atlanta Falcons, just a year removed from playing at Brown. A two-time First Team All-Ivy selection, Jarvis was a finalist for the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year award in 2017.
