
Women’s Hockey Opens Season with 3-1 Win Over Holy Cross

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown women's hockey team opened the 2018-19 season with a 3-1 win over Holy Cross on Friday night at Meehan Auditorium. The Bears scored a goal in each period while junior Calla Isaac (Sherwood Park, Alberta) allowed just one score while making 24 saves.
Senior Bridget Carey (Weymouth, Mass.) recorded the first goal of the year at 14:10 of the first period. Senior Abby Niewchas (Cochrane, Alberta) sent a puck in from the point that was turned away by Holy Cross goalie Jada Brenon, but Carey followed up the rebound and put in the score for a 1-0 Brown advantage. Freshman Shay Maloney (McHenry, Ill.) also picked up an assist on the play, her first collegiate point.
The first period ended with shots in favor of the Bears, 10-4. Brown also shut the door on Holy Cross' lone power-play opportunity.
Holy Cross (0-4-2) evened the contest at 4:30 of the second period on a tally from Reilly Maeve. Freshman Jacquie Tam (Toronto, Ontario) regained the lead for Brown (1-0-0) when she put in her first-career goal at 7:32 of the stanza when she collected sophomore Kaitijane Blumberg's (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) rebound in front. Junior Sena Hanson (New Brighton, Minn.) also contributed a helper.
Isaac came up big in the second with 12 saves while the Bears improved to 2-0 on the penalty kill. Holy Cross had the edge for shots in the frame at 13-11.
Play in the third was back and forth until Hanson further secured the win with a goal at 17:23. Blumberg intercepted the puck in the neutral zone and fed it to a racing Hanson who took it in for a 3-1 Bears advantage.
Holy Cross pulled its netminder at 18:20 and Isaac fended off three shots as Brown sealed the victory. Isaac finished the contest with 24 saves while Jada Brenon made 25 stops in the opposing goal.
The Bears led overall in shots for the night, 28-25. Both teams came up empty on the power-play, each going 0-for-2.
Brown will next close out the series with Holy Cross tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Hart Center starting at 7:00 p.m.
