PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman forward Star White scored 1:24 into overtime to lift Brown University women's soccer to a 1-0 win over Dartmouth College in the Ivy League opener for both teams on Sunday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
The Bears (8-2-0, 1-0-0 Ivy) won their fifth straight game, tied a program record with their third overtime win this season, and took a one-goal decision for the sixth time this year with their victory over the visiting Big Green (4-5-0, 0-1-0 Ivy).
"I think they worked extremely hard the whole day. We just weren't finding the back of the net," head coach Kia McNeill said. "On that last play Star did a very good job of placing that ball and putting a bit of power on it. It was a great shot. Star was dangerous all day."
White (Norfolk, Va.) tallied her fourth goal this season and posted her second game-winning goal in the last three games. Junior midfielder Celia Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) posted her fourth assist of the season and her third helper in the last four games.
In the 92nd minute, sophomore midfielder Abby Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) won a header off a goal kick. Story then worked a ball out left to White who controlled the ball in the box and sent a shot into the right side of the goal to end the game at the 91:24 mark.
Junior goalkeeper Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made two saves in her second shutout win (8-2-0) of the season. Her 16 career shutouts put her in a tie for third all-time at Brown with Alex Smith '84. She now has 24 career wins – taking sole possession of fourth place on Brown's all-time list.
Brown's back line of freshman center back Sydney Cummings (Millstone Township, N.J.), senior right back Katy Schmidt (Corvallis, Ore.), junior left back Nicole Phillips (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.), and senior defensive midfielder Maclaine Lehan (Shrewsbury, Mass.) contributed to the Bears' third shutout as a team this fall.
The Bears created the better of the game's offensive chances, outshooting the visitors 23-6, including an 11-4 advantage in the first half and a 10-2 margin in the second half.
Story nearly netted a goal in the first half as she pushed a shot toward the goal in the 22nd minute that a Dartmouth defender cleared off the line.
Dartmouth goalkeeper Mariel Gordon stopped five shots in the loss (4-5-0).
"It was a hot one today, and it is even hotter out on the turf," McNeill said. "They showed a lot of grit, and I think they have showed it all season. They deserved this one, and I am happy to walk away with this win."
Next, Brown plays its first conference road match at Columbia on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 4:00 p.m.
