CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore Yeram Park hit a home run to cap a six-run rally to force extra innings in game one, but Brown University softball fell to Harvard University, 7-6 in game one and 8-0 in game two, in a doubleheader at Soldiers Field on Saturday afternoon.
In an Ivy League North Division twin bill, the Bears (16-19, 5-9 Ivy) rallied for six runs between the sixth and seventh innings to tie game one before the host Crimson (23-14, 11-3 Ivy) took the opener in eight innings and notched a run-rule win in five innings in the nightcap.
Park (Arcadia, Calif.) hit her fourth home run of the season in the first game and finished the doubleheader 4-for-6. Sophomore Grayson Metzger (Severna Park, Md.) and freshman Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) each brought home runs with doubles as part of the game one comeback.
Next, Brown completes its four-game series at Harvard with a twin bill tomorrow beginning at 12:30 p.m.
Game 1: Harvard 7, Brown 6 (8 Innings)
Park hit a home run to cap a six-run rally and send the game to extra innings, but Harvard pulled out a 7-6 win over Brown in eight innings in game one.
The Bears rallied from a six-run deficit with two runs in the top of the sixth and four runs in the top of the seventh to force extra frames.
Park went 3-for-4 in the game with her home run, RBI, and two runs scored while junior Sarah Syrop (Kennesaw, Ga.) and freshman Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) each went 2-for-4. Metzger registered a pinch-hit, two-run double in the seventh as part of the Bears' comeback.
Trailing 6-0 heading to the sixth, senior Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) absorbed a pitch and Park sent a single through the right side to put two runners on base. Lotz then drove an RBI double to left center, and junior Christina Andrews (Southlake, Texas) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to make the score 6-2.
The Bears tied the game with four runs in the seventh with Park's solo shot – her fourth homer of the year – to left field finishing the surge. With two runners on base, Metzger hit her double down the right field line to plate a pair. Leung then brought in a run with a ground out to setup Park's blast.
After Brown retired the side in order in the last of the seventh, the Bears loaded the bases with one out in the top of the eighth before the Crimson escaped the jam. Harvard walked off with the win as Catherine Callaway brought home a run on a ground ball with the bases loaded.
Brown sophomore pitcher Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) pitched 7.0 innings, allowing seven runs, five earned, on nine hits with two strikeouts in the loss (8-8).
Harvard starter Morgan Groom tossed 6.2 innings, giving up two runs on six hits with one strikeout. Reliever Sarah Smith (3-2) permitted four runs, one earned, on four hits in 1.1 innings.
The Crimson logged two unearned runs in the bottom of the first as one run scored on an error and a second came home on a Giana Panariello single. Rhianna Rich plated a run with a groundout in the last of the second to make it 3-0 Harvard. The hosts pulled ahead 6-0 with three runs in the bottom of the fourth on RBI singles from Maddy Kaplan, Rich, and Meagan Lantz.
Game 2: Harvard 8, Brown 0 (5 Innings)
Lantz and Elizabeth Shively each hit home runs as Harvard scored eight runs in four innings to gain an 8-0 decision over Brown in five innings in game two.
For the Bears, Park and Venegas each recorded a hit, and Park stole a base.
Harvard's Taylor Cabe (13-3) earned the win, pitching a complete-game 5.0 innings and allowing no runs on two hits with five strikeouts.
In the bottom of the first, Lantz hit a two-run homer down the left field line, and Shively sent a two-run shot over the wall in left field to put Harvard up 4-0.
The Crimson went ahead 6-0 in the last of the second as Savannah Bradley slotted a two-run single down the left field line. Kaplan posted an RBI double to left center in the home half of the third, and Kaitlyn Schiffhauer hit an RBI single to left in the bottom of the fourth.
