
Andrews Homers, Softball Falls in Pair at Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Christina Andrews hit her third home run of the season in game two, but Brown University softball dropped a pair of games at Harvard University, 6-2 in game one and 11-4 in game two, on Sunday afternoon at Soldiers Field.
The Bears (16-21, 5-11 Ivy) took a lead twice in the second game before the host Crimson (25-15, 13-3 Ivy) rallied to capture all four games of the Ivy League North Division weekend series.
Andrews (Southlake, Texas) finished the twin bill 4-for-8 with three RBIs, a home run, a double, and two runs scored while senior Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) went 4-for-8 with three runs scored between the two games.
Next, Brown concludes its regular season with a four-game series vs. Yale, including a home doubleheader on Friday, Apr. 29 and a road win bill on Saturday, Apr. 30.
Game 1: Harvard 6, Brown 2
Leung and Andrews each went 2-for-4 with a run scored, but Brown fell to Harvard, 6-2, in game one.
Junior Sarah Syrop (Kennesaw, Ga.) drove in both of the Bears' runs with a two-run single in the top of the first.
Brown sophomore pitcher Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) tossed a complete-game 6.0 innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits with six strikeouts in the loss (8-9).
Harvard starter Taylor Cabe (14-3) picked up the win, going the full 7.0 innings and surrendering two runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts. Haley Davis led the Crimson at the plate, finishing the game 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
The Bears struck for two runs in the top of the first to open the game. Sophomore Yeram Park (Arcadia, Calif.), Leung, and Andrews each singled to load the bases with one out. Syrop then came to the plate with two down and brought home both Leung and Andrews with a two-run single.
The Crimson answered with three runs in the home half of the first beginning with a two-run single from Giana Panariello. Elizabeth Shively concluded the inning's scoring with an RBI single to plate an unearned run.
Harvard pulled ahead 4-2 in the bottom of the second on an RBI single to left from Rhianna Rich, and the hosts scored two runs in the last of the sixth on a two-run double to center field from Davis.
Game 2: Harvard 11, Brown 4
Andrews knocked in three runs with a homer and a double, and Brown held a lead entering the fifth inning before Harvard claimed an 11-4 decision in game two.
Andrews, Leung, Park, and freshman Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) each went 2-for-4 in the game. Leung scored two runs while Lotz notched an RBI.
For the Crimson, Panariello and Davis each registered four RBIs in the contest.
Brown took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Leung hit a lead-off single up the middle, Park advanced her with a ground out, and Andrews brought her home with a double to right center.
In the bottom of the first, the Crimson pulled ahead 2-1 behind an RBI single from Panariello and a sacrifice fly from Davis.
The Bears regained the lead, 3-2, in the top of the third after Park led off the frame with a single, and Andrews followed with a two-run blast to left center.
The visitors extended their margin to 4-2 in the top of the fifth as Leung and Park each reached on bunt singles, and Lotz plated Leung with a single through the left side.
Harvard grabbed a 5-4 edge in the last of the fifth as Davis hit a three-run homer down the left field line. In the bottom of the sixth, the hosts scored six runs beginning with a two-run triple from Rich. Maddy Kaplan followed with an RBI single, and Panariello drove a three-run homer to right field.
Crimson reliever Morgan Groom (8-4) earned the win, throwing 4.0 innings and conceding one run on four hits with four strikeouts. Starter Kathleen Duncan pitched 3.0 innings and permitted three runs on five hits with one strikeout.
Brown junior starter Gina Chieffallo (Eynon, Pa.) took the loss (5-3), allowing nine runs, seven earned, on 11 hits over 5.1 innings. Junior reliever Leah Nakashima hurled 0.2 innings, giving up two runs, none earned, on three hits.
