CARY, N.C. – Senior Austin French (Orange, Conn.) threw seven scoreless innings, but the Brown baseball team fell to Alabama, 2-0, in the team's third and final game of the USA Baseball-Irish Classic on Sunday at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
Brown moved to 1-2 on the young season, while Alabama improved to 10-2 overall.
French tossed seven scoreless innings in his first start of the season, giving up four hits with seven strikeouts. Max Ritchie (Woodbridge, Conn.) took the loss in relief, giving up two runs in two innings. Ray Castillo made the start for Alabama, allowing just one hit in four innings, before Brock Love and Kyle Cameron combined for five scoreless frames out of the bullpen.
Jake Levine (Newton, Mass.) went 1-for-2 with two walks, while Kevin Guthrie (Sarasota, Fla.), Sam Grigo (Westbrook, Conn.) and Dalton Schroeder (Santa Barbara, Calif.) also had one hit apiece.
French and Castillo matched each other in a pitchers' duel and the bullpens continued to keep the game scoreless into the ninth inning, before the Crimson Tide broke through with two runs. Chance Vincent drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly and then Connor Short tacked on another run with an RBI single.
Brown made it interesting in the bottom half of the ninth with two runners on and two outs, as Levine walked and Grigo singled to short, but Cameron was able to get a final fly out to secure the win.
Brown will play a four-game series at Marshall next weekend, starting on Friday at 4 p.m.
