HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – The Brown baseball team limited Marshall to just three hits over the first 16 innings, but the Thundering Herd broke through in the 17th frame as the Bears dropped a marathon game, 3-2, Friday at Kennedy Center Field.
Brown (1-3) and Marshall (5-6) held each other off the scoreboard for nine innings between the eighth and 16th frame, before Sam Finfer hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 17th inning.
Christian Taugner (Roselle, Ill.) allowed two runs on three hits in seven innings for a no-decision as the starter. Dante Bosnic (Lutz, Fla.) tossed two scoreless innings with three strikeouts, before handing the ball to rookie Bobby Leyman (North Hampton, N.H.), who was outstanding in relief, tossing six hitless innings. JJ Sliepka (Houston, Texas) took the loss for the Bears, giving up one run and two hits in 1.2 innings of work.
Fernando Guerrero earned the win for Marshall as he provided four scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Sophomore Sam Grigo (Westbrook, Conn.) paced the Brown offense, going 3-for-7 at the plate with one home run. Rob Henry (Cranston, R.I.) and Jake Rosander (Fullerton, Calif.) had two hits apiece.
Brown struck first in the third inning, when Rosander hit a leadoff single down the left field line. He worked his way around the bases and eventually crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Grigo tacked on another run for the Bears in the top of the seventh with a solo shot over the left field fence for the two-run advantage.
The Thundering Herd finally got to Taugner in the bottom of the frame, however, when Tommy Lane launched a two-run homer to left center to even the score. The two bullpens cruised through the next two frames to send the game into extra innings.
Tim McKeithan (Arden, N.C.) and Henry hit consecutive one-out singles in the top of the 11th, but Sam Hunter came in and induced a double play to keep the game tied. Brown threatened again in the 16th when Kevin Guthire doubled to put two runners in scoring position, but the Bears could not push across the go-ahead run as the home side ended the frame on a strikeout.
Brown and Marshall continue the four-game set tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at noon.
