
Softball Concludes Play in South Carolina vs. Miami, Charleston

Mt. PLEASANT, S.C. – Brown University softball dropped a pair of decisions in its final day at the College of Charleston Invitational, falling to Miami (Ohio) University, 6-4, and to the host Cougars, 8-0, on Sunday at Patriots Point.
The Bears (8-7) rallied twice against the RedHawks (14-11), tying the game in third and fifth in the eventual setback, before falling to the Cougars (18-10) in a five-inning contest.
Between the two games, senior Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) reached base safely four times, concluding the day 3-for-6 at the plate with three RBIs, two doubles, a run scored, and a hit by pitch.
Next, Brown plays its first games this season in the New England region when the Bears take the field at Hartford for a doubleheader on Wednesday, Mar. 23 beginning at 3 p.m.
Game 1: Miami (Ohio) 6, Brown 4
Brown tied the game twice – in the bottom of the third and fifth – before Miami (Ohio) pulled out a 6-4 decision in the Bears' first game of the day in South Carolina.
The Bears scored three runs in the third to make the score 3-3 and matched the RedHawks at 4-4 in the fifth prior to Miami plating two runs in the top of the sixth.
Freshman Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) led the Bears at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, a double, and a run scored. Leung finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs while junior Julia Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.) went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
In the start, sophomore pitcher Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) tossed 5.1 innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits with six strikeouts in the loss (4-3). Junior Gina Chieffallo (Eynon, Pa.) threw 1.2 innings in relief, giving up no runs and two hits.
For Miami, Amber Logemann picked up the win (8-6), pitching 4.0 innings in relief and permitting one run on three hits with three strikeouts. Carly Mortensen went 3.0 innings in the start, conceding three runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
The RedHawks' Eryn McCarver went 3-for-5 with two runs scored while Lauren Anderson tallied three RBIs and a double.
Miami took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, pushing across one run with a walk and bringing home two more after an error.
Brown responded with three runs in the bottom of the third behind a two-run double from Lotz and an RBI single from Schoenewald. After freshman Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) and Leung reached to set the table, Lotz drove her double to center field to score them both, and Schoenewald followed with her single up the middle to plate Lotz.
The RedHawks re-gained a 4-3 lead in the top half of the fifth as a run scored on a groundout.
The Bears answered with a run in the home half of the frame as Leung led off the stanza with a single to left center, and Lotz brought her home with a single to center field.
Miami pulled ahead 6-4 behind two runs in the top of the sixth as Anderson hit a two-run double to center field with the bases loaded.
Game 2: College of Charleston 8, Brown 0 (5 Innings)
Brown fell to the host College of Charleston, 8-0, in five innings in its fifth and final game over three days at the tournament.
Charleston's Samantha Martin picked up the win (11-4), fanning three batters and allowing just one hit over 4.0 innings. Brittany Violette closed the game, striking out two batters in the top of the fifth.
Rebecca Mueller led the Cougars at the plate, registering a 3-for-3 game with two RBIs and a run scored. Taylor Dupree went 2-for-3 with three runs and a triple.
Leung notched a 1-for-2 effort at the plate and was hit by a pitch. She tallied the Bears' only hit with a double in the top of the third inning.
Junior pitcher Leah Nakashima (San Jose, Calif.) tossed 2.0 innings in the start, giving up five runs, one earned, on four hits with a strikeout in the loss (2-3). Chieffallo pitched 2.0 innings in relief, permitting three runs on four hits.
Brown threatened in the top of the first as Leung absorbed a pitch to lead off the inning. She moved to third after a sacrifice bunt from junior Lauren Hanna (Milford, Mass.) and a wild pitch. Schoenewald made it first and third with a two-out walk before the hosts got out of the jam.
Charleston scored two runs in the bottom of the first, plating one on an error and a second on a sacrifice fly from Carly Hansis.
The Cougars pulled ahead 5-0 with three runs in the last of the second. Mueller hit an RBI single to right center before Valerie Cassell sent a two-run double to left field.
The hosts took an 8-0 edge behind three runs in the home half of the third as Chandler Frisbie hit a two-run single to left center and Mueller brought in a run with a single to left field.
