
Softball Surges to Doubleheader Sweep of Mt. St. Mary's, 2-1, 13-2

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Brown University softball rallied in the late innings for a 2-1 win over Mount St. Mary's in game one before surging to a 13-2 victory in game two for a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday afternoon at Our Lady of Meadows Field.
The Bears (10-7) scored one run in each of the sixth and seventh innings to come back to take the first game from the Mountaineers (6-21) and combined to plate 10 runs between the sixth and seventh frames to take command of the nightcap.
Freshman Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) paced the Bears in game two, notching a 3-for-5 effort at the plate with five RBIs, two runs scored, and a double. Classmate Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) plated the decisive run in the top of the seventh in the opening game of the day.
In the circle, sophomore Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) and junior Gina Chieffallo (Eynon, Pa.) each pitched a complete game and picked up a win in games one and two respectively.
Next, Brown concludes its stay in the state of Maryland with a doubleheader at UMBC tomorrow beginning at 2 p.m.
Game 1: Brown 2, Mount St. Mary's 1
Sophomore Yeram Park hit an RBI single in the sixth, and Scarangella brought home the deciding run in the seventh as Brown rallied past Mount St. Mary's, 2-1, in game one.
Orona tossed a complete game, scattering five hits over 7.0 innings and allowing one run with four strikeouts in the win (5-3). Scarangella paced the Bears at the plate in the game, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Trailing 1-0 entering the top of the sixth, junior Lauren Hanna (Milford, Mass.) was hit by a pitch and Lotz walked to put runners on first and second. Park (Arcadia, Calif.) then sent a single into left field to score Hanna from second and tie the score at 1-1.
In the top of the seventh, sophomore Emily Springfield (Oceanside, Calif.) led off the frame with a double to left field before junior Christina Andrews (Southlake, Texas) moved her to third with a sacrifice bunt. Scarangella followed with her RBI single up the middle to plate sophomore Grayson Metzger (Severna Park, Md.) who pinch ran for Springfield.
The Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth as Rachel Heinze walked, Lindsay Heinze advanced her with a sacrifice bunt, and Rachel Gavigan plated her with an RBI single.
For the Mount, Sam Lichtner (2-7) hurled the full 7.0 innings, permitting the two runs on seven hits alongside five strikeouts.
Game 2: Brown 13, Mount St. Mary's 2
Lotz went 3-for-5 with five RBIs, two runs scored, and a double, and three other Bears recorded multiple-hit games as Brown surged past Mount St. Mary's, 13-2 in game two to complete the sweep of the twin bill.
Park finished 2-for-3 with two runs, a double, an RBI, and two walks, senior Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) enjoyed a 2-for-5 game with two runs and a triple, and Andrews registered a 2-for-5 effort with two RBIs, a run, and a double. Junior Sarah Syrop (Kennesaw, Ga.) added three RBIs and a double.
Chieffallo pitched a complete-game 7.0 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on nine hits with four strikeouts in the win (3-1).
After the Mount scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first, Andrews put the Bears up 2-1 in the top of the second as she hit a two-run double to left center. Brown made its edge 3-1 in the top of the fifth as Lotz plated Leung with a groundout.
The Bears then erupted for six runs in the top of the sixth. Metzger started the rally with an RBI single to left field. Lotz followed with a two-run single up the middle before Syrop cleared the bases with a double to center field.
The hosts pulled within 9-2 with a run in the last of the sixth, but the visitors responded with four more runs in the top of the seventh. Lotz opened the frame's scoring with a two-run single to right field before Park drove an RBI double into left center, and Lotz later scored on a wild pitch.
Mountaineer starter Marian Ruf (2-7) tossed 4.0 innings, conceding two runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Reliever Katie Olson surrendered five runs on four hits in 1.1 innings, and fellow reliever Erin Sweeney allowed six runs on six hits in 1.2 innings.
