
Softball Bests Appalachian St., Wagner on Day Two at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Brown University softball defeated Appalachian State University, 4-1 and edged Wagner College, 3-2, to sweep its competition on the second day of the Winthrop Invitational on Saturday at the Terry Softball Complex.
The Bears (3-1) topped the Mountaineers (2-11) in their first game of the day and followed that with a victory over the Seahawks (2-2).
Sophomore Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) pitched a complete game and struck out nine against Appalachian State. In the nightcap vs. Wagner, sophomore Yeram Park (Arcadia, Calif.) hit a three-run home run, and junior Leah Nakashima (San Jose, Calif.) threw a complete game with six strikeouts.
Next, Brown concludes competition at the Winthrop Invitational tomorrow against Rider University at 10:00 a.m.
Game 1 – Brown 4, Appalachian State 1
Orona threw a complete game with nine strikeouts, and four different Bears tallied multiple hits as Brown bested Appalachian State, 4-1, in its first game of the day Saturday afternoon in the Winthrop Invitational at Field C.
Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) threw 7.0 innings, allowing just one run on three hits to improve to 2-0 on the year. She faced the minimum in each of the first, third, and fourth innings.
Senior Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) went 3-for-3 in the game while Park, sophomore Annie McGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) and freshman Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) each finished 2-for-3 at the plate. McGregor recorded two RBIs, and Park posted an RBI and a run scored.
The Mountaineers placed the first run on the board in the top of the second as an infield single from Katie Mathewson brought home Cara Parker with two outs.
The Bears responded with a pair of runs in the last half of the inning as the team loaded the bases on a pair of singles from Park and Lotz and a walk from junior Julia Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.). Freshman Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) then brought Park home with a sacrifice fly, and McGregor drove in Lotz with a single to right center.
Brown pushed its edge to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth frame. Schoenewald set the table with a single up the middle with one out before McGregor plated her with a two-out single to right center.
Leung helped push the Bears' lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth, singling up the middle with one out, stealing second, and coming home on an RBI single off the bat of Park with two down.
Vanessa Ciocatto (1-5) took the loss for the Mountaineers, hurling 2.0 innings and giving up two runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Annaleise Kennedy threw 4.0 innings in relief, allowing two runs on six hits.
Game 2 – Brown 3, Wagner 2
Park hit her three-run homer in the top of the sixth, and Nakashima gave up just two runs over 7.0 innings as Brown knocked off Wagner, 3-2, in its nightcap on Saturday evening at Winthrop's Field C.
Park knocked in all three of the Bears' runs while Lotz went 2-for-3 at the plate. Junior Lauren Hanna (Milford, Mass.), freshman Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.), and Park each scored a run. Schoenewald hit her third double in four games on the year.
Nakashima (1-1) allowed two runs on four hits with six strikeouts over 7.0 innings. She faced either three or four batters in six of the seven frames.
After five innings of scoreless play, the Bears took a 3-0 lead on Park's first home run of the season. After Hanna reached on an error, and Seitz singled, Park sent the ball out of the park with two outs to plate the game's first runs.
In the bottom of the sixth, Hanna Gilbert hit a solo home run to bring the Seahawks within 3-1. Maddie Marable brought in a run for Wagner in the last of the seventh with a single to right field before Nakashima snuffed out the rally.
For Wagner, McKaleigh Goodale (0-1) took the loss, throwing a complete-game 7.0 innings and conceding three runs, none earned, on seven hits with two strikeouts.
