
Softball Erupts for 20-2 Win over Rider, Finishes 4-1 at Winthrop Invite

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Brown University softball erupted for 20 runs on 21 hits with two home runs to defeat Rider University, 20-2, in five innings in the team's final game at the Winthrop Invitational at the Terry Softball Complex's Field C on Sunday morning.
The Bears (4-1) plated four runs in each of the first, second, and fifth innings and totaled eight runs in the third to cruise past the Broncs (0-5). Brown finished 4-1 in its opening weekend in South Carolina, defeating Canisius, Appalachian State, Wagner, and Rider.
Four different Bears recorded three or more hits in the game while six different batters posted two or more RBIs.
A pair of Bears hit homers, as sophomore Yeram Park (Arcadia, Calif.) drove a three-run home run to center field in the top of the second and freshman Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) hit a two-run blast to left center in the first. Seitz finished the day 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Freshman Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) went 4-for-4 at the plate while junior Lauren Hanna (Milford, Mass.) and sophomore Annie McGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) each tallied three hits. McGregor added three RBIs and two runs scored with two doubles.
Senior Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) scored a team-high three runs and posted three RBIs, and junior Julia Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.) hit a triple as part of a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.
In the circle, junior Gina Chieffallo (Eynon, Pa.) threw all five innings and allowed two runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Chieffallo (1-0) retired the side in order in the bottom of the fifth to close out the contest.
The Bears struck for four runs in the top of the first as Seitz opened up the scoring with her homer to left center. Schoenewald followed with a triple that scored Park, and Lotz singled up the middle to plate Schoenewald.
Brown pushed its lead to 8-0 in the away half of the second as Seitz drove home a run with a single, and Park smashed a three-run bomb to straight away center.
Bruno extended its advantage to 16-0 after the top of the third, bringing eight runs across the plate in the frame. Freshmen Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) and Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) each pushed a run across with a walk before Leung cleared the bases for three RBIs. Schoenewald scored another with a single, and McGregor closed the stanza's scoring with a two-run double.
The Broncs notched their two runs behind a two-run home run from Emily Cottrell in the bottom of the third.
The Bears tacked on four runs in the top of the fourth, including RBI singles from McGregor, Venegas, and Hanna.
Jayme Zeilman (0-2) took the loss for Rider, giving up eight runs on eight hits in 1.2 innings.
Next, Brown competes in five games at the Spartan Classic at UNC Greensboro from Friday, Mar. 4 to Sunday, Mar. 6. The Bears play Rutgers (10 a.m.) and North Carolina Central (12:30 p.m.) on Friday, take on NCCU (Noon) and UNCG (5 p.m.) on Saturday, and square off with UNCG (12:30 p.m.) on Sunday.
