SERIES HISTORY
Brown trails Harvard in the all-time series between the two teams, 20-28-3. The Crimson have won the last seven match-ups in the series, with the Bears last emerging with a victory on Oct. 16, 2010. Harvard won last year's tilt, 1-0, on a goal from Margaret Purce in the 73rd minute. Entering the 52nd meeting between the sides, second-place Harvard (seven points) stands one point ahead of third-place Brown (six points) in the league standings.
ETZEL LEADS NCAA IN GAA, SAVE PERCENTAGE
Sophomore goalkeeper Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) leads the NCAA in goals-against average (0.329) and save percentage (0.926) while ranking seventh in the country in shutouts (eight).
She has posted eight shutouts in 12 matches this season and has allowed just four goals in 1,095 minutes. Etzel leads the Ivy League in saves (50), goals-against average, save percentage, and shutouts. She stopped seven shots in the Bears' 2-1 win at Princeton, made a career-high nine saves in Brown's 2-0 (2OT) draw at Buffalo, and turned aside a penalty kick in a 1-0 win at Lafayette.
Her eight shutouts this year rank in third place on Brown's single-season list, and her 12 career clean sheets rank in a tie for fourth in the Bears' career record book. Last season, the Honorable Mention All-Ivy pick ranked second in the Ivy League in both total saves (75) and save percentage (83.3 percent), finishing the year with four shutouts and a 0.99 goals-against average.
SAVE PERCENTAGE TEAM LEADERS
As a team, Brown leads the nation in save percentage (0.921), ranks third in goals-against average (0.395), and stands seventh in shutout percentage (0.667). The Bears' defensive unit has aided sophomore goalkeeper Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) with Brown's back four primarily composing junior Maclaine Lehan (Shrewsbury, Mass.), senior Sydney Calas (Bethesda, Md.), junior Katy Schmidt (Corvallis, Ore.), and sophomore Nicole Phillips (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.). Sophomore Megan Grant (Carlsbad, Calif.), junior Sarah Cobb (North Tustin, Calif.), and freshmen Abby Kaplan (Potomac, Md.) and Terri Wilken (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) have all contributed to the team's defensive organization.
GOULD PACES THE ATTACK
Senior Carly Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.) leads Brown with nine points, tying for the team high in both goals (three) and assists (three). The team captain leads Brown in shots (29) and shots on goal (13). She has scored a pair of game-winning goals for the Bears, providing the decisive tally in Brown's 3-0 win over Rhode Island and the team's 1-0 win at Lafayette. She compiled a goal and an assist in Brown's 3-2 win at Holy Cross. A two-time All-Ivy selection, Gould has played in 60 games with 56 starts and 14 goals in her career.
STORY OF A GIRL
Sophomore forward Celia Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) has scored the game-winning goals in each of Brown's last two games, netting the game winners in a 2-1 win at Princeton and a 3-2 win at Holy Cross. She scored the decisive goal against the Tigers in the 88th minute, mirroring her goal to give the Bears a 3-2 double overtime win at Cornell in 2015. For the season, she is tied for the team lead with three goals.
TAKING DOWN THE TIGERS
Sophomore Jennifer Caruso (Brockton, Mass.) scored in the 10th minute, and classmate Celia Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) netted the game winner in the 88th minute as Brown toppled defending Ivy League champion Princeton, 2-1, on Oct. 8. The Bears snapped a nine-game Ivy unbeaten streak for the host Tigers, coming up with their first win at Princeton since 2006.
LEHAN ANCHORS BACK, ENTERS OFFENSIVE EQUATION
Junior Maclaine Lehan (Shrewsbury, Mass.) anchors the Bears' defensive unit from her center back position. Having missed just one game for Brown over her career, she has played every minute in all 44 games in which she has appeared. Lehan entered into the offensive equation for the first time in her career vs. URI, scoring a goal and adding an assist in the team's 3-0 season-opening win. She tallied an assist in Brown's 1-0 victory over Dartmouth in its Ivy opener and tacked on another helper in a 3-2 win at Holy Cross.
FIRST CAREER GOALS
Sophomore forward Jennifer Caruso (Brockton, Mass.) scored her first career goal in the 10th minute of Brown's 2-1 win at Princeton, snapping a 302-minute home shutout streak for the Tigers. She notched her second career assist in a 3-2 win at Holy Cross. Junior defender Katy Schmidt (Corvallis, Ore.) found the back of the net for the first time in her career in the win against the Crusaders.
Sophomore forward Kate Maher (Seattle, Wash.) netted her first career goal in the Bears' 1-0 win over Dartmouth in their Ivy League opener, capitalizing on a rebound after junior Maclaine Lehan (Shrewsbury, Mass.) drove a header on target off a corner kick from junior Sarah Cobb (North Tustin, Calif.).
Freshman midfielder Abby Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal as she netted the game winner in Brown's 1-0 win over Stony Brook in the 31st minute off a header via a corner kick from Cobb. Carchio logged the first two assists of her career in Brown's 3-2 win at Holy Cross.
WARSHAUER RETURNS TO SCORING STAGE
Senior Ella Warshauer (Santa Monica, Calif.), making her first appearance since the 2014 season, scored the game-winning goal in Brown's 1-0 win at Central Connecticut State. The tally stood as Warshauer's second career goal as she also netted the game winner in Brown's 2-0 win over Quinnipiac on Oct. 7, 2014.
WALDMAN ON THE WING
Junior Mikela Waldman (San Francisco, Calif.) has proven herself dangerous on the attack for Brown, consistently playing in threatening balls from the right wing. She posted two assists in the Bears' 3-0 win over URI, tying a career high and pushing her career assist total to seven.
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON
Harvard enters Saturday's match-up with a 7-3-2 overall record and a 2-0-1 mark in Ivy League play. The Crimson have played in a pair of double-overtime draws in their last two outings, tying Boston University, 2-2, on Oct. 11 and Cornell, 0-0, on Oct. 8.
Margaret Purce leads the Ivy League in points (23) and goals (10) while ranking 11th in the NCAA in goals per game (0.83) and 14th in points per game (1.92). Lizzie Durack has seen most of the time in goal, recording a 0.97 GAA and three shutouts over seven starts. Danielle Etzel, the twin sister of Brown sophomore Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.), has made four starts and posted a 1.43 GAA.
