PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In the highly anticipated matchup between the top two crews from last year's IRA National Championship, Brown men's crew dropped three races to four-time reigning champion Washington Saturday morning on the Seekonk River.
This was the first time Washington visited the Bears' home course in the history of the two programs, and fans came out in full force to support the unprecedented event, lining up along the banks of the Seekonk River and the docks of Narragansett Boat Club.
The first race of the day was between the two freshmen crews. Washington raced out to a quick start and held a 1-2 seat lead at the 500-meter mark, but increased its momentum from there and secured just shy of a length advantage at the midway point of the 2,000-meter race. Washington kept the Bears at bay at 1,500 meters with a full length lead and cruised to victory at 5:45.5, while the Bears crossed at 5:52.3
The next race of the morning was between the second varsity crews in addition to Brown's third varsity boat. Brown's JV boat shot out to a quick start and held a slight lead at about 250 meters, but after the Huskies pulled out in front by a deck length, the two crews settled in level just after 500 meters. Washington held a slight lead halfway through the race and then used a strong push during the third 500 for a length advantage at 1,500 meters for the eventual victory at 5:40.7. The Brown JC+V finished at 5:47.6 and the Brown third varsity crossed at 6:04.3.
In the third and final race of the day, the two varsity eight boats roared off the line and were neck-and-neck for 300 meters, until the Huskies established a slim one-seat advantage. The two boats continued to battle and jostled back-and-forth with the visitors slightly in front, but Washington took a firm advantage during the third 500 for a length lead just before the 1,500-meter mark. Brown fought back during the final 500 meters, but it was not enough to pull even as the Huskies claimed the race at 5:32.5, edging the Bears at 5:36.7.
Brown returns to action on Saturday, April 11 when they visit Harvard in the annual battle for the Stein Cup.
