CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Brown men's crew competed in its third event of the spring season on Saturday as the Bears fell to Harvard in the annual battle for the Stein Cup on the Charles River. Despite a late season start due to the historic winter freeze, Harvard was able to run the table, beating Bruno in all five races.
The Fourth Varsity found itself outmatched against the Harvard Second Freshman and Fourth Varsities, finishing third in a time of 7:26. The 3rd Varsity had a strong start, but was walked on in the second quarter of the race and could not respond. They finished in a time of 6:44, with Harvard completing the course in 6:38.
The Brown Freshmen were jumped off the line and spent the remainder of the race scrambling to catch Harvard's Freshman boat, but it was not enough, as the Crimson won in a time of 6:29, with Brown trailing at 6:38. In the JV, the two boats got off to a good start, but Harvard took a devastating move in the second quarter of the race, putting Brown a full length behind them before the halfway mark. Harvard won in a time of 6:26 with Brown crossing at 6:34.
The closest race of the day was in the Varsity Eight race, where Brown was able to hold speed with the Harvard 1V until one of the oarsmen got his oar caught in the water due to the powerful headwind and choppy conditions. Despite this, the two crews held their positions, but Harvard was able to take a few better strokes in the wind than the young Brown boat, and finished first in a time of 6:34, with Brown hot on their tail at 6:38.
Brown returns to the water next week on Saturday, April 18 when the Bears host Northeastern on the Seekonk River.
