PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Lindsey Repp (Scarsdale, N.Y.) recorded a career high three points, including what proved to be the game-winning goal with 13:39 to play, as the Brown women's lacrosse team edged Columbia, 7-6, on Saturday at Stevenson Field.
The Bears improve to 18-0 all-time against the Lions, also securing their first Ivy win of the season (6-6, 1-4 Ivy), while Columbia drops to 4-8, 1-4 Ivy.
Senior Janie Gion (Northfield, Ill.) celebrated Senior Day in style with two goals and two assists to move into sole possession of second place on the team with 22 points.
Lauren Toy (Kentfield, Calif.) added a goal and assist, while Dianne Vitkus (Skaneateles, N.Y.) and Emma Dahle (Wynnewood, Pa.) each found the back of the net on Saturday. Dahle extends her point streak to four games (4-3-7) and now ranks sixth on the team in scoring with 12 points.
After the teams exchanged two goals each in the opening 11 minutes, the Bears went to work and notched the next three markers thanks to Gion, Repp, and Dahle, who's goal with 11:08 to play in the first gave the Bears a 5-2 advantage. Taylor Quinn brought the Lions back within two before Gion struck again off a slick feed from Toy to give the Bears a three-goal cushion entering the half.
A defensive struggle in the second half saw just four combined goals, with three coming from the visiting Lions to make things interesting down the stretch. Caroline Joy capped her hat trick in the second half, after Repp's goal had given the Bears a 7-5 lead with 13:39 to play. Joy's strike off a free position attempt with 2:49 to play brought Columbia within one at 7-6.
Alyssa DiBona's (Media, Pa.) crucial draw control win after the Joy goal allowed the Bears to run out the clock and secure their first Ivy League win of the season. Brown goalkeeper Kellie Roddy (Poway, Calif.) also boasted a strong Senior Day performance, making eight stops to even her record to 6-6.
The Bears and Lions combined for just 11 turnovers all game, with Brown only turning it over a season low five times. Columbia doubled up Brown on the draw, 10-5, and held a slight 8-6 edge in ground balls. Sarah Greenberg chipped in with two goals for the Lions on Saturday.
Up next, the Brown concludes its 2015 home schedule under the lights on Tuesday against UMass-Lowell beginning at 6 p.m.
