CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Nick Lappin (Geneva, Ill.) scored a pair of goals, but the Brown men's hockey team's comeback from a three-goal deficit fell just short, as the Bears fell to No. 19 Harvard, 4-3, in game two of the ECAC First Round Saturday at the Bright-Landry Center.
Harvard (17-11-3) claimed the series in two games after a 6-2 victory on Friday and will move on to the ECAC Quarterfinals. Brown finished the 2014-15 season at 8-20-3 overall.
Sophomore Davey Middleton (Novi, Mich.) also scored for the Bears, while junior Mark Naclerio (Milford, Conn.) had two assists. Sophomore Tim Ernst (Pickering, Ontario) stopped 24 saves in net, while Steve Michalek had 24 saves on the other end for the Crimson.
Brown jumped out to an early lead when Nick Lappin scored at 2:23 for his team-high 12th goal of the season. After Naclerio won a clean faceoff, Lappin blasted a shot past Michalek for the 1-0 advantage.
Harvard responded with three straight goals to close out the period, starting at 7:51, when Jimmy Vesey fielded a pass from Kyle Criscuolo and rifled a shot into the back of the net to even the score. The duo teamed up once again at 9:58, except this time it was Criscuolo with the tally to give the home side the one-goal lead. Brian Hart tacked on a third goal late in the period at 17:52 when he skated behind the net, faked a pass in front, and quickly snuck the puck past the pad of Ernst to give the Crimson a 3-1 lead at the first intermission.
The Crimson picked up right where they left off to start the second period, as Colin Blackwell scored 1:07 into the stanza, when he hit the top corner for the three-goal advantage, 4-1.
Brown continued to fight, however, and it paid off at 13:34 when Middleton recorded his third goal of the season. The sophomore battled for the puck in front and pushed a shot past Michalek to trim the deficit to two, 4-2. Rookie Tim Lappin (Saint Charles, Ill.) and sophomore Zack Pryzbek (Niagara on the Lake, Ontario) earned the assists on the play.
Brown outshot the Crimson by a 12-10 margin in the second period.
The Bears cut the lead to one at 11:07 in the third when Lappin notched his second goal of the night. Naclerio started the play when he took control of the puck in the neutral zone and shoveled a pass to Lappin, who charged down the ice toward the net, maneuvered through a pair of defensemen and beat Michalek to pull the visitors within a goal.
Despite another late attempt by Lappin at 4:04, the Crimson held on down the stretch, as Michalek denied a final dash by Matt Lorito (Oakville, Ontario) and Naclerio to secure the victory.
Harvard outshot the Bears in the contest, 28-27. Lappin paced the Bears with seven shots.
