MORAGA, Calif. – Freshman Emily Springfield hit the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the eighth to lift Brown University softball to a 3-2 win over Saint Mary's College after the Bears fell to the Gaels in eight innings in game one, 1-0, in a doubleheader at Cottrell Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Springfield (Oceanside, Calif.) knocked her decisive single into left field with two outs in the top of the eighth inning to allow the Bears (5-7) to split with the Gaels (13-21) in the final two games of their California swing. Freshman Annie McGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) tied the game in the top of the seventh with a double down the left field line.
Senior Jessica Cherness (Torrance, Calif.) earned her first win of the season, tossing a complete game and allowing one earned run with five strikeouts. Freshman pitcher Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) gave up just one run on six hits with five strikeouts over 7.2 innings in game one.
Next, Brown opens Ivy League play with a doubleheader at Cornell University on Friday beginning at 2 p.m.
Game 1 – St. Mary's 1, Brown 0 (8 inn.)
Orona (4-1) did not allow a run over the originally scheduled seven innings, but St. Mary's Katelyn Mamizuka hit the game-winning RBI single to right field with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Gaels' Katie Moss (7-4) picked up the shutout win, allowing one hit with eight strikeouts.
The Bears threatened in the top of the first inning as sophomore Lauren Hanna (Milford, Mass.) walked, stole second, and advanced to third on a passed ball before Moss ended the inning.
Brown loaded the bases in the next inning as sophomore Sarah Syrop (Kennesaw, Ga.) and McGregor each reached on an error, and freshman Grayson Metzger (Severna Park, Md.) walked before Moss again got out of the jam.
Orona allowed just four runners to reach base over the first six innings, and Brown again challenged the hosts in the top of the seventh as Syrop notched the Bears' first hit of the game with a single up the middle. She moved to second on a McGregor sacrifice bunt before Moss recorded the next two outs.
In the bottom of the eighth, Orona retired the first two batters she faced before Andrea Hazel worked a walk. After a Loralie Fitzpatrick single, Mamizuka hit her walk-off single to right.
Game 2 – Brown 3, St. Mary's 2 (8 inn.)
McGregor tied the game with an RBI double in the top of the seventh, Springfield put Brown up in the top of the eighth, and Cherness completed her complete game in the bottom of the eighth to lead Brown to a 3-2 win over St. Mary's in game two.
Springfield went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI while Metzger registered a 2-for-3 effort and scored the game-winning run.
Lujane Mussadi (4-13) took the loss for St. Mary's, throwing 7.2 innings and giving up three runs on eight hits.
St. Mary's struck for the game's first run as Mamizuka placed an RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the third.
The Bears answered in the top of the fourth as junior Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) led off the inning with a single to right. After a Hanna sacrifice, Springfield singled to left to move Leung to third. Freshman Yeram Park (Arcadia, Calif.) then sent a single to left to score Leung.
The Gaels took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth as Mamizuka notched her second RBI single of the game.
Brown rallied in the top of the seventh as Sryop doubled to left center with one out. After Mussadi tallied the second out, McGregor sent a double down the left field line to tie the game.
Metzger singled to lead off the top of the eighth, and two outs later Springfield came through with her single to left. Cherness retired the Gaels in order in the last of the eighth.
