
Softball Beats Cornell 10-2 in Game Two to Split Doubleheader

ITHACA, N.Y. – Junior Janet Leung went a combined 5-for-8 with three runs scored to help Brown University softball beat Cornell University, 10-2, in five innings in game two after falling 4-3 in game one in a doubleheader at Niemand-Robison Field on Friday afternoon.
In their first Ivy League series of the season, the Bears (6-8, 1-1 Ivy) nearly rallied to win the first game before pulling away from the Big Red (4-9, 1-1 Ivy) with six runs in the top of the fourth in the second contest.
Senior Jessica Cherness (Torrance, Calif.) earned the win in game two, throwing a complete game and striking out two while allowing two runs on four hits. Freshman Yeram Park (Arcadia, Calif.) finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs in the victory.
Next, Brown plays Princeton University in a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Bordentown Regional High School in Bordentown, N.J.
Game 1 – Cornell 4, Brown 3
Brown rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh behind doubles from sophomore Sarah Syrop and Park, but the Bears fell to Cornell in game one, 4-3.
Syrop (Kennesaw, Ga.) went 1-for-3 with a two-run double, Park (Arcadia, Calif.) hit 1-for-2 with an RBI double and a run, and Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Freshman pitcher Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) struck out six batters over a complete-game six innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits in the loss (4-2).
Maddie Orcutt (3-2) took the win for the Big Red, tossing a complete game and giving up three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
Trailing 4-0 heading into the seventh inning, the Bears began their comeback as Leung led off the inning with an infield single. Sophomore Lauren Hanna (Milford, Mass.) followed with a single to put runners on first and second.
After Cornell recorded an out, Park hit a double to left center to score Leung. Syrop then sent another double to left center to score a pair and bring the Bears within 4-3. Orcutt retired the next two Brown batters to get out of the jam.
The Big Red captured a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third as Meg Parker placed a single through the left side of the infield to drive in a pair of runs with the bases loaded.
Cornell pushed its lead to 4-0 in the last of the fifth with Megan Murray sending a single up the middle to plate a pair of unearned runs.
Game 2 – Brown 10, Cornell 2 (5 inn.)
Park went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs, freshman Emily Springfield (Oceanside, Calif.) notched three RBIs, and Brown beat Cornell in five innings in game two, 10-2.
Leung enjoyed a 3-for-4 game at the plate with two runs scored, a double, and an RBI. Hanna and freshman Grayson Metzger (Severna Park, Md.) scored three and two runs respectively.
Cherness (2-2) earned the win, pitching five innings and striking out two while allowing two runs on four hits.
The Bears jumped on the Big Red in the top of the first as Park doubled to left center to score Leung – who led off the inning with a double – and Hanna. After Cornell scored a run in the bottom of the first, Brown took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third as Park singled to score Hanna.
Brown opened up the game with six runs in the top of the fourth to pull ahead, 9-1. The Bears loaded the bases to start the inning, and Metzger walked to force home a run. Leung followed with a single through the right side to plate another run.
Springfield continued the rally, driving in a pair of runs with a single down the left field line. Park hit an RBI single to left, and senior Trista Chavez (San Pedro, Calif.) knocked in a run before the inning ended.
Cornell scored once in the bottom of the fourth, and Springfield tacked on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth for the Bears.
Sierra Stone (0-5) took the loss for Cornell, giving up eight runs on six hits with three strikeouts over three innings in the start.
