Softball Splits Twinbill with UC Santa Barbara, Wins Game One

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Brown University softball split a doubleheader with the University of California, Santa Barbara on Sunday winning game one, 11-1, before falling in game two, 10-2, in the Santa Clara Round Robin at SCU Softball Field.
Both contests between the Bears (4-6) and the Gauchos (11-20) went five innings.
In game one, freshman Emily Springfield (Oceanside, Calif.) led the Bears at the plate with a 3-for-3 effort, including her first collegiate home run. Classmate Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) pitched a complete game to pick up her fourth win in as many starts this season.
Next, Brown plays a doubleheader at St. Mary's College on Tuesday beginning at 4 p.m. EST.
Game 1 – Brown 11, UC Santa Barbara 1 (5 inn.)
Springfield went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, two runs scored, and a home run to lead Brown past UC Santa Barbara in five innings, 11-1, in game one.
The Bears scored five runs in the top of the first inning and added a run in the second, three in the third, and two in the fourth to run rule the Gauchos.
Junior Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario), freshman Yeram Park (Arcadia Calif.), and sophomore Sarah Syrop (Kennesaw, Ga.) each recorded two hits while Syrop and freshman Annie McGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) each posted two RBIs.
In the circle, Orona pitched a complete game, allowing one run on seven hits with four strikeouts to improve to 4-0 on the year.
Brown loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first as Leung hit a leadoff double, sophomore Lauren Hanna (Milford, Mass.) reached on a bunt single, and Chavez walked. McGregor then opened the game's scoring with a two-run double to left center.
Springfield continued the rally, driving in a run with a single to center field, and Park followed with an RBI double to left center. Syrop finished the inning's scoring with a ground ball to second base.
The Bears pushed their lead to 6-0 in the top of the second as Springfield brought Chavez in with a single to center field. The Gauchos pulled within 6-1 with a run in the bottom half of the frame. Brown then plated two runs in the top of the third as Leung and Hanna each put balls in play, which led to three unearned runs.
Leading off the top of the fourth, Springfield hit her first career home run, blasting a solo shot to left field. Syrop tacked on an RBI single to center later in the inning.
Game 2 – UC Santa Barbara 10, Brown 2 (5 inn.)
McGregor and Park each registered a hit and an RBI, but Brown fell to UCSB, 10-2, in game two in five innings.
For the Gachos, Jessica Johnson went 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Arianna Palomares, and Shelby Wilson each notched three RBIs.
Lena Mayer (3-3) picked up the win for UC Santa Barbara, tossing a complete game and giving up two runs on six hits.
The Gauchos opened the game's scoring with three runs in the top of the first beginning with an infield single from Palomares that brought in a run. A ground out and a single through the left side plated two more runs for UCSB.
The Bears countered in the top of the first as Leung led off the inning with a single through the right side. After a Hanna bunt single and a Chavez fly out, McGregor sent a single into left field to bring Brown within 3-1.
In the top of the third, Shelby Wisdom hit a two-run home run to left field to push UCSB's lead to 5-1.
Brown responded again in the next half inning as Park singled up the middle to score Hanna and cut the Bears' deficit to 5-2.
UCSB then scored five runs in the top of the fourth to pull away from the Bears. Palomares and Meshalon Moore each hit two-run homers in the inning as part of the rally.
Sophomore Leah Nakashima (San Jose, Calif.) took the loss (0-4) for the Bears, allowing eight runs over 3.2 innings with one strikeout. Classmate Gina Chieffallo (Eynon, Pa.) did not allow an earned run in 1.1 innings of relief.
