MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Junior Janet Leung hit her first home run of the season as Brown University softball closed its five-game swing in the state of South Carolina with a 4-2 setback to Army on Sunday morning at the Grand Park Athletic Complex.
Despite falling to the Black Knights (7-7), the Bears (2-3) enjoyed a strong start to the 2015 season, debuting on a grass-and-dirt surface for the first time this year and competing against teams with a number of games under their belts.
"This was a great first weekend for our team," Brown head coach Katie Flynn said. "We played poised and with great confidence, especially at the plate. The offense got off to a tremendous start as you can see from our power numbers and stolen bases."
On the weekend, Brown topped Army, 7-3, on Friday and Bucknell, 10-6, on Saturday while falling to Bucknell, 11-6, on Friday and Canisius, 6-2, on Saturday.
Against the Black Knights on Sunday, Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) knocked a leadoff homer over the left field fence in the bottom of the first while sophomore Lauren Hanna (Milford, Mass.) went 2-for-4 at the plate.
In the circle, freshman Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) did not allow a hit with three strikeouts over two innings of relief. Senior Jessica Cherness (Torrance, Calif.) pitched five innings and allowed four runs on five hits in the loss (0-1).
The Black Knights took a 2-0 lead after the top of the first as Xiomara Perez powered a two-run home run to center field. Leung's homer in the bottom half of the inning pulled the Bears within 2-1.
In the top of the fourth, Perez hit her second two-run homer of the game to stake the designated visitors to a 4-1 advantage.
The Bears rallied for a run in the bottom of the sixth as freshman Grayson Metzger (Severna Park, Md.) laced an RBI double that scored Hanna.
For Army, Kristen West took the win (3-2) tossing a complete game seven innings with two strikeouts.
Next, Brown begins play in the Tiger Clash at Towson University on March 6 with games against Manhattan (11:00 a.m.) and Delaware State (1:30 p.m.).
