
Women's Soccer Presents Awards at Annual Team Banquet

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University women's soccer presented its postseason team awards at the Bears' annual banquet with senior Charlotte Beach earning MVP honors and classmate Erin Katz garnering a pair of awards at Cassarino's Restaurant on Thursday night.
Beach (New Haven, Conn.) garnered the Ridgely Most Valuable Player Award for the second straight year while Katz (Montgomery, Ala.) took home the Margeson/Prell Team Spirit Award for the second season in a row in addition to winning the Sarah Nicholson Memorial Award.
Junior Carly Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.) earned the Denis Chartier Memorial Award as the team's leading point scorer, and freshman goalkeeper Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) gained the newly instituted Arlene Gorton '52 Award given to the program's top newcomer.
Recipients of the team's Dobson-Kay Coaches' Awards included senior captain Sarah Moody (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.), sophomore Sarah Cobb (North Tustin, Calif.), senior Jillian DeSimone (Lincoln, R.I.), and junior Sydney Calas (Bethesda, Md.).
Seniors Beach, DeSimone, Katz, Moody, Michelle Jolson (Wyoming, Ohio), and Hogan Vivier (Cumberland, R.I.) earned their traditional white sweaters while freshmen Etzel, Jennifer Caruso (Brockton, Mass.), Megan Grant (Carlsbad, Calif.), Amanda Lane (Paradise Valley, Ariz.), Kate Maher (Seattle, Wash.), Natalie Messing (Los Angeles, Calif.), Nicole Phillips (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.), and Celia Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) gained their brown sweaters.
Presenters on the evening included Brown Director of Athletics Jack Hayes, retiring 39-year head coach Phil Pincince, assistant coaches Luis Faria and Ashley O'Brien, faculty advisor Warren Prell, Brown athletic administrators Colin Sullivan and Jeanne Carhart, trainer Shelley Lundin, and Ed '60 and Barbara Nicholson, the parents of Sarah Nicholson.
Ivy League Digital Network broadcasters Mike Rubin '00 and Mike Mancuso '98 served as the night's masters of ceremonies. O'Brien, with assistance from multimedia director Kevin Hession, produced a highlight video for the night's festivities.
Ridgley Most Valuable Player Award: Charlotte Beach (Sr., New Haven, Conn.)
- The Ridgely MVP Award is presented annually as voted by the players. The award is in honor of Professor and Mrs. Beverly Ridgely for their outstanding contributions to Brown women's soccer.
- Beach earned Second Team All-Ivy honors and a spot in the NEWISA Senior Bowl this past season. She finished her career with 67 games played and 56 games started.
Dobson-Kay Coaches' Award: Sarah Moody (Sr., Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.); Sarah Cobb (So., North Tustin, Calif.); Jillian DeSimone (Sr., Lincoln, R.I.); Sydney Calas (Jr., Bethesda, Md.)
- The Dobson-Kay Coaches' Award is presented annually to the player(s) chosen by the coach for outstanding contribution, dedication, and sportsmanship. The award is in honor of Stan Dobson '58 and Gene Kay '58 for their strong support and promotion of the Brown women's soccer program.
- Moody started all 16 games this past fall and finished her career with 57 games played and 51 games started.
- Cobb moved from the midfield to center back in 2015 and started all 16 games.
- DeSimone saved her best season for her last, starting all 16 games and recording seven points on two goals and three assists.
- Calas played both up front and in the back for the Bears this past fall, appearing in 13 games with 11 starts before an injury cut her season short.
Sarah Nicholson Memorial Award: Erin Katz (Sr., Montgomery, Ala.)
Margeson/Prell Team Spirit Award: Erin Katz (Sr., Montgomery, Ala.)
- Initiated in 1996, the Sarah Nicholson Memorial Award is given to a senior on the team who, through total dedication and loyalty, has given the most of themselves for the good of the team.
- The Margeson/Prell Team Spirit Award is presented annually to the player who exhibits the most team spirit as voted by the players. The award is in honor of Jane Margeson, "Soccer Enthusiast," mother of Bill Margeson '37, Hall of Fame (soccer, 1970), and Professor Warren Prell who served as faculty liaison to the women's soccer program from 1995 to 2015.
- Katz gained Honorable Mention All-Ivy accolades in 2015 and played in 15 games with 14 starts. She scored all three goals in Brown's 3-2 (OT) win vs. Sacred Heart.
Denis Chartier Memorial Award: Carly Gould (Jr., Hampton Falls, N.H.)
- The Denis Chartier Memorial Award was initiated in 2011, and is presented annually to the team's leading point scorer. It is in memory of former assistant coach, Denis Chartier, who died at the age of 56 and was a loyal, dedicated coach with the Brown women's soccer program for 15 years.
- Gould, a First Team All-Ivy performer, led the Bears in 2015 with 16 points on a team-best seven goals and two assists. She scored six goals in Brown's last five games, including a hat trick vs. Marist.
Arlene Gorton '52 Award: Christine Etzel (Fr., Madison, Conn.)
- The Arlene Gorton '52 Award, initiated in 2015, goes to the outstanding newcomer in the program as voted on by the players. The award is named after former Brown Associate Director of Athletics, Arlene Gorton – a pioneer for all women's sports at Brown in the 1970's and 1980's.
- Etzel gained Honorable Mention All-Ivy laurels and took home Ivy Rookie of the Week three times. She ranked second in the league in total saves (75) and save percentage (83.3 percent).
