PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Cornell's Trevor Yates scored the lone goal of the game and Mitch Gillam stopped all 27 shots he faced as the Brown men's hockey team fell to the Big Red, 1-0, in ECAC action Saturday at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown (1-4-2) snapped a three-game unbeaten streak with the loss, while Cornell improved to 6-1-1 and 4-1-1.
Junior Tim Ernst (Pickering, Ontario) made 15 saves, allowing just two goals in the two-game weekend. Tommy Marchin (Algonac, Mich.) and Nick Lappin (Geneva, Ill.) paced Brown with six and five shots, respectively.
The two teams were scoreless after the first period, though Brown held a 10-3 edge in shots, including a few quality chances in the final few minutes. Gillam denied Nick Lappin's bid from the crease and then turned away the rebound from Brady Schoo (Eden Prairie) to preserve the tie.
Brown and Cornell carried over their physical play into the second period, which featured chances on both sides, before the Big Red capitalized at 11:16 when Yates tucked a shot past Ernst for the one-goal lead.
Cornell opened up the third period with 1:18 of a previous power play, but Ernst stopped both shots and Max Willman (Barnstable, Mass.) had a shot on net for the short-handed attempt.
The Bears enjoyed a pair of power-play opportunities midway through the third period, and were able to set up in the offensive zone both times, but the Big Red continued to block shots and held the Bears to without a good look.
The Big Red defense stepped up the rest of the way, and Gillam blocked a Tommy Marchin push in the crease during the final minute, securing the goaltender's second shutout in as many nights.
Brown outshot the Big Red, 27-16.
Brown will head out to Northern Ireland next weekend to play in the inaugural Friendship Four in Belfast, starting with an ECAC matchup against Colgate on Friday. The winner will meet either UMass Lowell or Northeastern in the championship/consolation games on Saturday.
