PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore goaltender Monica Elvin made a career-high 39 saves, but Colgate University scored two power play goals in the second period and added an empty-net goal in the third to defeat Brown University women's ice hockey, 3-0, at Meehan Auditorium on Friday afternoon.
The Bears (4-14-0, 1-10-0 ECAC) gained two breakaway opportunities to pull within a goal in the third period, but tallies from Shelby Perry and Craig Taylor in the intermediate frame plus Meliisa Kueber's empty netter stood up for the visiting Raiders (5-17-0, 2-8-0 ECAC).
Elvin (Oakland, Calif.) turned aside 18 shots in a scoreless first period before stopping 10 shots in the second stanza and 11 in the final frame. Colgate net-minder Ashlynne Rando took the win behind 18 saves.
Brown increased its pressure on the Raiders in the second period, outshooting the visitors, 13-12. Seniors Sarah Robson (Mississauga, Ontario) and Janice Yang (Westpor, Conn.) tallied five and three shots on goal respectively in the period while freshman Samantha Swanstrom (Ham Lake, Minn.) nearly netted a goal prior to an official review.
In the third period, Robson almost scored on a breakaway about six minutes into the period, and sophomore Maddie Woo (Plymouth, Minn.) attempted to capitalize on another odd-man rush three quarters of the way through the final frame.
Perry charted the game's first marker 3:18 into the second period on the power play, shooting from the right side after an attempted clear from the Bears.
At the 15:52 mark of the second stanza, Craig pushed Colgate's lead to 2-0 as the Raiders worked the puck between the right side of the goal and the right faceoff circle. Katelyn Parker and Miriam Drubel assisted on the play.
Kueber logged the game's final goal with under 53 seconds to play after intercepting an errant pass.
Colgate held a 42-18 advantage in shots and went 2-for-2 on the power play. The Raiders killed off all three of Brown's power play opportunities, including two chances in the third period. The Bears led in blocked shots, 12-9.
Next, Brown hosts Cornell tomorrow at 4 p.m.
