PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Seniors Brittany Moorehead and Sarah Robson each scored goals to give Brown University women's ice hockey a lead, but Cornell University netted the contest's final three goals to take a 4-2 win on Saturday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium.
The Bears (4-15-0, 1-11-0 ECAC) earned a 1-0 lead late in the first period off a Moorehead (Clinton, N.Y.) tally and held a 2-1 edge early in the second behind a Robson (Mississauga, Ontario) marker, but the visiting Big Red (9-6-3, 7-2-2 ECAC) answered with two goals in the second stanza and an insurance tally late in the final frame.
Brown sophomore goaltender Monica Elvin (Oakland, Calif.) made 34 saves, totaling 73 saves over two games this weekend. Cornell goalie Amelia Boughn turned aside 19 shots in her second win of the season.
For the Big Red, Brianne Jenner and Taylor Woods each posted a goal and an assist while Cassandra Poudrier and Emily Fulton logged two assists apiece.
After both teams played to a stalemate throughout the majority of the first period Moorehead broke through with under 56 seconds to play in the period. On the play, senior Lauren Vella (Staten Island, N.Y.) won the puck in the defensive zone and slid it out to Moorehead who worked a give-and-go with classmate Janice Yang (Westport, Conn.) before pocketing her fourth goal of the year.
Cornell responded 28 seconds later as a shot from Jess Brown from behind the net deflected into the goal to tie the score at 1-1 heading into the first intermission.
Robson accomplished her goal with no assist, stealing the puck in neutral ice and sniping a shot after crossing the blue line to record Brown's second short-handed goal of the season at the 4:01 mark of the second period.
The Big Red tied the score at 2-2, just over 10 minutes later as defenseman Sydney Smith registered her first goal of 2014-15.
Although the Bears held off a 5-on-3 situation later in the period, Cornell scored in the ensuing 5-on-4 matchup off a Jenner goal with just under two minutes remaining in the intermediate stanza.
The visitors tacked on a final goal with 2:22 to play as Woods charted the team's second power play goal of the game.
Next, Brown hosts Yale on Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. before traveling to play the Bulldogs in New Haven the next day at 4 p.m.
