PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Maddie Woo scored a career-high two goals, but Brown University women's ice hockey fell to Providence College, 4-2, at Schneider Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Friars (3-12-3) evened up the season series at one game apiece after the Bears (4-7-0) defeated their cross-town rivals yesterday afternoon, 2-1, at Meehan Auditorium to claim the 20th Annual Mayor's Cup.
Woo (Plymouth, Minn.) doubled her career goals total on the day, having come into the game with two goals scored in 39 career games. Senior Sarah Robson (Mississauga, Ontario) earned her team-leading seventh assist of the season while freshman Samantha Swanstrom (Ham Lake, Minn.) tallied her third assist this year.
Brown freshman goaltender Julianne Landry (Hanover, Mass.) made 24 saves in the setback. Providence net-minder Allie Morse stopped 20 shots in the win.
The Bears netted the first period's only goal as Woo recorded her first goal of the season 10:30 into the opening period off a feed from Swanstrom. Providence took a 2-1 lead after two periods behind goals from Beth Hanrahan and Liv Halvorson despite the Bears outshooting the hosts, 9-7, in the second stanza.
The visitors knotted the game at 2-2 just under 12 minutes into the third period as Woo registered the team's first short-handed tally of the year. After Swanstrom took a checking penalty, Robson assisted Woo, the contest's first star, on the game-tying goal.
Cassidy Carels notched the game-winning goal about four minutes later as she scored off assists from Haley Frade and Lexi Romanchuk 15:29 into the closing frame. Providence added an empty-net tally with 51 seconds remaining for the final.
For the game, the Friars held a 28-22 lead in shots on goal. The Bears killed off four penalties in the contest while the Friars stopped five power play opportunities for the visitors.
Next, Brown returns to ECAC play at RPI on Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. and at Union on Dec. 6 at 4 p.m.
