TROY, N.Y. – Brown University women's ice hockey netted five third-period goals from five different scorers but could not overcome a 7-0 deficit in a 7-5 loss at RPI on Friday night at Houston Field House.
The Bears (4-8-0, 1-4-0 ECAC) registered the game's last five goals – four of which came on the power play – to threaten the host Engineers (3-11-2, 1-4-0 ECAC) who scored four goals in the first period and brought a 6-0 lead into the third period.
For the Bears, seniors Kaitlyn Keon (Toronto, Ontario) and Janice Yang (Westport, Conn.), junior Kelly Micholson (Elk Grove Village, Ill.), sophomore Maddie Woo (Plymouth, Minn.), and freshman Samantha Swanstrom (Ham Lake, Minn.) each registered a goal and an assist.
Keon recorded a point for the ninth time in her last 11 games and pushed her team-leading point total to 13 while Swanstrom notched her first collegiate goal, and Woo scored her third goal in the last two games.
Senior Sarah Robson (Mississauga, Ontario) charted her team-best eighth assist of the season while classmates Lauren Vella (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Brittany Moorehead (Clinton, N.Y.) and junior Ariana Rucker (Oakton, Va.) each added one assist.
Micholson initiated the Brown rally with a shot from the slot during a 5-on-3 situation exactly one minute into the third period. After Keon won a faceoff, Robson slid a pass to Micholson for the open shot.
Woo registered the Bears' second goal during another 5-on-3 scenario as her shot from the left point off a pass from Swanstrom found the back of the net at 8:51. Swanstrom followed suit 25 seconds later as she converted a shot from the right point off a pass from Woo on the power play.
The Bears pulled within 7-4 off a goal from Keon at the 16:44 mark during the man advantage as she battled for a rebound after a shot from Micholson. Yang posted the visitors' last goal as she corralled and redirected a point shot from Moorehead with less than a second to play.
The Engineers netted all four of their goals in the first period in the frame's first eight minutes. Jenn Godin opened the game's scoring at 1:49. Marisa Raspa put RPI up 3-0 with two goals 13 seconds apart at 3:28 and 3:41.
Delaney Middlebrook tallied RPI's fourth goal in the first stanza with a shot 7:27 into the period. RPI tacked on two more goals in the second period as Laura Horwood scored just over a minute into the frame, and Alex Gruschow scored on the power play with just over four minutes left in the period.
RPI scored its seventh goal off a short-handed tally from Gruschow 12 seconds into the third stanza.
Brown freshman goaltender Julianne Landry (Hanover, Mass.) made 20 saves in 55:51. Goalie Brianna Piper stopped 27 shots in the win for RPI.
The Bears held a 32-28 lead in shots.
Next, Brown plays at Union tomorrow at 4 p.m.
